Zero Bandwidth Usage after login

Hi folks,

Have been trying to help my friend with one of their issues, I'm a technician myself and have a decent understanding of Second Life itself so you don't need to explain things in baby talk to me :).

The problem is as it says in the title, they can login to Second Life alright with no trouble, but when they get in its pretty much like being underground and under the ctrl/shift/1 stats bandwidth usage is 0 almost as if something is blocking a certain connection. I've guided them through the following "possible solutions" that didn't work at all.

(Not in order of "attempt";)

~Network driver updated/downgraded
~Re-installation of Second Life itself (Including clearing cache and adjusting all possible settings related to Bandwidth usage)
~Forcing the connection to individual sims incase the avatar was stuck in one.
~Adjusting/removing/installing any security software that may be related.

I'm just wondering before I go any further to try help them that there isn't an "easy" fix for this out there already....I've searched a bit but haven't come up with anything so far.

Thanks in advance for any help.

What about the LAN they are on? Maybe the firewall is eating traffic? Sometimes these things think "UDP flooding attack" when confronted with SL traffic.

You might want to check http://suezannecbaskerville.wordpress.com/second-life-firewalls-routers-ports-udp-tcp/

That's stuff from the knowledgebase on connections.

Wired or wireless?

Sorry I forgot to mention, this just happened one day, worked in the past but then suddenly stopped for some reason. And its on wired, the next step I was going to take is their router/modem but since another computer in their house works...it is strange.

Hardware firewalls need to allow access on certain network ports. Second Life needs to connect to ports 443/TCP, 12035/UDP, 12036/UDP, 12043/TCP, and 13000-13050/UDP. You should configure your firewall to allow outbound traffic on those ports, and related inbound traffic. You’ll need to consult your firewall’s documentation, or the manufacturer’s website, for instructions on how to make these changes to your firewall. As of Version 1.13.2, released Jan. 10th, 2007, you may need to enable UDP/TCP in order to access Second Life.

Maybe that would help.

Also silly as it might sound, one might try a system restore.

You might try going to the Technical forum and using the "search this forum" option, or using the advance search /invalid_link.html to search.

may sound stupid but if it just started one day, and isn't stopping I'd also check with the ISP since they may have trapped it as a server/file sharing app, and blocked (or severely limited) the connection... depending on what's in their aggreement for usage they can do that legally (and some do it anyways and lie about it). it may even be occuring only at peak hours (early to late evening)

But wouldn't that partially block the ability to login?

My off the cuff answer is that is sounds like a firewall problem; but that has been mentioned above so .... just seconding that opinion.

I concur - sounds like an anti-virus block.

not neccessarily, the heavy bandwidth/streaming doesn't kick in till after you login, and that's what it'd be likely for an isp to block or limit traffic on

I had this happen one day. I had to go into preferences and change the port on one machine to 13001. Problem solved.

Hardware firewall and software firewall both cleared, even uninstalled the software one at one point in time. No change whatsoever, same as with changing the ports that it uses. Still under ctrl shift 1 stats it has no change in the usage of bandwidth stuck at "0".
