Why "No Transfer" for Items Sold by Vendor?

Hi,
I should already know this, but anyway here's my question:
I finally finished SL Christmas shopping, but had a heckuva time because so many things I wanted to purchase were "No Transfer." I understand why a vendor would have their goods set as "No Copy" or "No Modify," but why "No Transfer?" I figure several vendors missed out on getting my money because they had No Transfer for just about everything they sold.
Thanks, Avanti

The main reason for No Transfer is because they want to allow Copy so that you can make multiple copies in case of inventory loss. If they are going to allow Copy, they have to forbid Transfer, because otherwise you'd have both Copy and Transfer and could give the item away for free to everyone.

No transfer is good because you can always copy the item if you mess it up. And vendors are more likely to replace a no transfer item than something you can give away.

Hmmm....you may be right. Oddly--perhaps--I make my products Copy/Mod...and No Transfer...
Why? I don't know...perhaps I'm confused with Resell/Give Away and Transfer...

Personally, I like to be able to copy things. I keep the original box in a folder called .. original boxes. I also mix and match clothing and shoes to make outfits I like, I can then put a copy of every thing I need in one folder and just wear the folder rather than trying to find all the items and accessories every time.
So, because of this, I set my things copy/mod/no trans. I also have at least one vendor at each shop where you can buy any item and have it delivered to a friend.
Your other option is check SLExchange or On-Rez. Either of these web sites allow you to buy items and have them delivered to a 3rd party.
If all else fails, send a notecard to the store owner asking for assistance. Most of the small shops would love to help you out. It never hurts to ask.

Resell/Giveaway and Transfer are the same thing. I have found that my customers have far more problems receiving and or loosing items where Resell/Giveaway or Transfer is allowed. The vast majority of complaints I've received regarding items not being delivered or disappearing from inventory were for transferable items. Linden Labs has even issued public warnings at times that you should hot rezz any no copy items at certain times because there were bugs causing them to fail to rezz in SL but still disappear from your inventory.
Also there is no reason for a merchant to hesitate to replace a mod/copy/no transfer item, as long as they can verify there was purchase. Scammers can sometimes claim they did not receive a transferable item, so they can get another and sell it or give it away as a gift.

"G" Yes, but especially when you're shopping for gifts this "gift delivery" is just not personal enough. I want to be able to nicely wrap up gifts, add a nice card and stuff like that. Something like "SLX magix box gave you..." isn't romantic enough for me Some nice stuff was not bought by me because of no-trans . hrugs:. More a loss for the creator than for me.

I sell everything copy/mod no transfer because SL is buggy and the items could be lost in your inventory or you might modify something and mess it up..this way you can make back- up copies just in case. I always thought this was the best way to go though it isn't the best for gift giving. I wish there was another way but I always just ask the person to contact me and I'll give them a transferable version lacking the copy permission Lately the big problem seems to be people buying things but not ever receiving them! Yay!

now this thread gave me an idea, and I am an idiot to not have thought of it before
I make and sell transferable ladies clothes and shoes, and skins, and soon adding eyes to that... (no hair YET)
I know people like no transfer items that they can copy... and I always thought way too many prims to reset perms to box them that way and sell both options....
welllll
why not put the copy ones in a vendor! duh me
heh

Personally, I really don't like "No Transfer" items.
However, most SL creators had to move to "No Transfer" because of an exploit that allowed copies to be made of "No Copy" items. I'm not sure if LL has fixed this exploit yet, so I'm not going to go into anymore detail about how it works.

You'll find that most merchats, if you just ask, will be happy to facilitate giving a no-transfer item as a gift. Either they can set it up via SLX or OnRez, where you buy there and designate the recipient, or you pay the merchant and the merchant delivers the item for you to the recipient.
Happy Holidays!

"G" When I'm shopping for someone else, this is exactly what I do! I go to SLEx, buy it and send to the intended. And yes, one of the reasons I have my stuff as No Transfer is because I do a lot of prim skirts and such.. I'm also bad about breaking stuff, so I figure I'd rather set things copy so people can break them, get a new copy and go from there. Then they don't have to wait for me to be online to either explain things to them or to send on the new prim piece.
