Windlight water for the mainland?

Does anyone know if there is water I can put in a stream on the mainland that will look like the "real" water does under windlight?

You can use a sculptie base water texture, then make an animated alpha texture that has the glowy shmmering on (u only need 3 frames with white splodges in different places) and make the alpha map the same sculptie as the base, then raise it up about 0.01 and u have your water, u can add shiny or other effects to enhance it.

If its a pool u want then u can do the same with prims, and emulate the water "fog" by using simple color transparent 50% prims

There is no way at this time to exactly replicate the effect that Windlight will do for Linden water, no. Just like there is no way on the current viewer to get prim water to do some of the things Linden water does, like reflections of the moon.

In fact, that is one thing that will really suck once Windlight becomes part of the normal viewer. Any non-Linden prim-based water will look terrible, and won't even come close to looking like Windlight water does, with the highlights, animated ripples, and most of all the reflections!

It is relatively easy to take a single planar resource per sim and allow the calculations for ripples and surface reflections on that water plane. Allowing that to work for any surface of any one of up to 15,000 prims in a sim? Can you say server crash? The calculation load would be staggering.

Thank you very much to both of you. Not exactly the answers I wanted to hear, but they are what I expected. :)

Presumably LL could add "water" as a material type (like you can pick wood, rubber, etc) to get the windlight reflective effect on prim water?

Be nice to be able to have windlight beauty on non-Linden water.

Actually, no. The servers would probably take no hit whatsoever. These calculations are purely clientside. -Hence the whole issue of having a computer which can run them.

It is likely that it would require some unnecessarily complicated calculations to allow any random prim to be textured like this, but it would be immensely useful with a special prim which could only be placed horizontally and duplicated Linden water, kind of like, say, grass is a special prim type with custom behaviour.

I talked to Torley and several other Lindens today at a Windlight Q&A office hours session in-world, and I asked them about plans to allow a similar effect on prims that they have on the new Windlight water. I mentioned that as a builder, the fact that prim lakes and rivers won't look remotely like the new Windlight water is a major negative.

They said that they are planning some sort of similar effect that will allow for matching prim water. Yay!
