Anybody remember how much Starax's wand cost way back when? all I can find is "most expensive item in SL" Thanks! I recall that the price raised over time. When one of my friends got it in my first month or two in SL (so let's say April 2007), it was L$16,000 _____________________

When I looked at it once it was 10kL. Starax had it very dramatically displayed at that time in a little shop in the air. As I recall it was lit by a fat beam of light that sprang from an overhead fixture; the surrounding walls were black, making the wand show up in its display case most theatrically. I considered buying it but didn't because things, realistically, just sink into my inventory, and I don't get much use from them.
I remember having great fun with a wand-owner and pals on the preview grid in about... oh... 2005 or 6. I'd built a moated house shaped like a giant pencil, and we stood before it calling out words and falling all over ourselves with glee. I remember that was the time when some funny glitch made all the Linden plants giganto, so eelgrass was about 12m high We had the old evil footshadows then, too.Once in my gallery I ran into Starax and thought he was holding a wand, so cried out HIPPOS! several times, then had to explain (he hadn't been holding a wand so that ended up with more lollery). _____________________

Alright. What was so special about the wand that made it so expensive?

My biggest SL regret is not buying that wand when I could. It is or was full of different wonderful magical things you could do. Some still work but many are broke.
Some of the ones I remember (note these memories are a bit fuzzy from an awed newcome perspective) causing a house of glass to appear that then could come dramatically down around your ears with lovely glass pieces and breaking glass sound; herds of buffalo stampeding; many of his works of art could be made to appear. I will let other tell some of the wonders if they want. |

I still have one. It cost L$10,000 when I bought it, but I believe the price went up as content was added to it. I also believe there were some ways of getting one for free - the owner of Four Seasons had one to do a magic show (although I'm not sure it ever happened) and if you won the built-in game you could get a free one for a friend.
Basically, it rezzed objects, it was just that the objects were neat. They included things like a giant, working, shufflepuck table; a window looking out onto a 3D city; and a noose which, when clicked on, sent you into a tunnel you could walk through into "heaven" (or rather the waiting room outside heaven).. Any of the smaller rezzable objects could be used as a (non-damaging) bullet, so you could use the wand as a cow launcher if you wanted to. Also, some versions contained a "game" where your wand would slowly charge up all the time you had it worn; if you got to full charge, you got a free wand for a friend, and you could zap other people to steal their charge. As far as I'm aware, when Starax was leaving (or preparing to leave) he released a final update to the wand which basically contained everything he'd ever made that wasn't an exclusive contract. Also, part of the reason he left was because an SL bug occasionally rezzed objects full perm, so some of the objects inside the wand were copied and used in other things, including other wands. Unfortunately, now that "no build" has become the defacto standard for public areas, it's not anywhere near as much fun as it used to be.. Also, as far as I'm aware, it was not the most expensive item in SL, even at that time. A Tringo hosting system was L$15000. An artwork by DonCoyote Antonelli could be L$30000 or more. |

/me got to play with one that Rezzable had out for a bit. It was sorta borked but based on the amount of fun I had with it, it seems like it would have been well, WELL worth 10-15K$L.. Sadly, he was gone before I joined..
