Anyone know what's with the sudden increase of L$ to $ ratio?

I just went to the sell page and it's suddenly gone from the usual L$260/$1 to L$265/$1. Anyone know why?

Market value. Lindens have fallen against the US dollar.

Yeesh, didn't even notice. I guess that's why you called it sudden. No idea, hope it goes back down though.

I would expect there have been a lot of people cashing out lately. Especially people who are merchants in adult content or who spend a lot of their SL time involved with adult content. The recent push by LL to force at least some of the adult content sellers and possibly end users to move to a special adults-only continent and off the mainland would certainly be incentive for a lot of people to just cash it in, before their business tanks.

I've actually noticed, on SLX, the opposite. What I call a "sweetening" of the exchange rate for cashing out.

A while back, let's call it 6 months back, in order to get 51USD out of SLX, you had to sell something like 14800 L$. As of yesterday, that number had fallen to 14000 (exactly).

Meaning that I had to "sell less" to "make the same amount of USD".

The exchange rate on SLX has been gradually sweetening over the last few months, suggesting that there may be a slightly smaller supply of L$ compared to demand. With LL being aware of the bot problems, and announcing all sorts of stuff, it may be that they've been making fewer L$ available to the general marketplace for sale, thus allowing the value of the L$ to rise slightly in comparison to the dollar.

This is actually really good for content creators. Because it means that for the same income of L$, we're able to "take home" just a little more in terms of USD.

These numbers fluctuate with open buy orders, of course.. but as of this moment on SLX, 14049 L$ will get you $51.00 even. (on the lindex, you'll need L$14232 to get $51.00)..

Either way, from the perspective of a seller.. it's way better than the days when it took 14800 to make $51.00.

But at the end of the day, we're only talking about the difference of a couple of bucks.

This is the snapshot I just saw:

Exchange Rate Total Remaining Quantity
L$267 / US$1.00 L$101,000
L$266 / US$1.00 L$508,215
L$265 / US$1.00 L$1,866,473
L$264 / US$1.00 L$2,000
L$261 / US$1.00 L$694,113
L$260 / US$1.00 L$2,789,562
L$259 / US$1.00 L$44,359,378
L$258 / US$1.00 L$16,113,776

Seems like someone, for some inexplicable reason, put a load of L$ on at 265.

Selling usually goes at a fast clip. This just happened in the last few hours. It may be a glitch in the system. My sell order was just starting to be filled when suddenly there is 5 million in front of me at stupid prices. Hopefully this will be cleared up by the morning.

Money market manipulation..............WE NEED A BAILOUT!!

It's really silly to fuss over a few Linden drop in rate.........in my opinion. I mean, after all, most of you big time content creators can still apply for food stamps on your SL income. :)

The LindeX prevailing sell rate has moved to 258. The Lindens allowed this to happen, and Zee said as much in a forum post a couple of months ago, as the LindeX just began increasing in value against the US Dollar. It is probably to encourage the continued work of content creators and other businessfolks in these tough economic times. It's only a few cents but it's a boon nonetheless.

I'll tell ya, when I typed in 14300, 14200, 14100, and the estimated proceeds were STILL over 51.. I smiled.. Then when I typed in 14000 and it came out to precisely 51.00.. I was like "Happy Birthday!" (you gotta add that extra $1 to pay the paypal fee)

I know it doesn't much difference really.. but it made me smile. First time I've smiled about SL in days.

I see the rate increased to 235 as large amounts of buying ate through all the sell orders. I imagine the circuit breakers kicked in, thats why the sell orders are lining up at too low prices. This should clear up by morning. The last time this happened was on a sunday too, nobody must be at the wheel...

I guess this could be considered a good indicator, there is very strong demand for the linden still. :)

what's needed on the Lindex is a red popup that warns the noobs that they might have made a typo, and that anyone - not just their friends - could buy their L$

Hardly, adult biz won't tank, trust me on that, it never has, it never does, and it never will. You'll still be able to search and teleport directly to the content, so, it's not going to tank.

there has been some trouble with the lindex, resulting in less buys.

You guys drive me crazy! So many misconceptions it's hard to address them all in one post.

Firstly, any number under 10,000,000 is pretty much irrelevant on the LindeX. A few people occasionally put orders in at 265, 262, 7432432 and whatever else because they are as clueless as everyone else. This doesn't make that number the new exchange rate it's just a meaningless blip like when someone sets their land for sale for L$1/sqm or some crazy thing.

The LindeX exchange rate has been gradually getting better for cashing out over the last 6 months. Showing that either less people are cashing out, more people are buying L$ or for some other reason there are not enough L$ out there to satisfy demand. The "prevailing rate" right now is not 258. If you put an order up now at 258 there's a good possibility it will never trade. 259 is the prevailing limit sell price.

All in all though I guess Salvador had it right and there was a brief glitch preventing people from buying.

*Edit: Forgot to say you can see the history of this little blip here: http://ninjaland.net/tools/lindex-market-data/

In the time following the announcement about the upcoming Verification enforcement to access Adult areas, a great deal of public discussion has taken place in forum threads. Crucial topics have been that Verification is not working properly for significant numbers (especially non-U.S.A.), many countries have populations that are unable to Verify for legal or privacy reasons, many countries are places where it's difficult to use Paypal or get a credit card, etc. I feel that it is classist and/or racist to regard those unwillingly-unverified SL users as unimportant.

Also in the threads there have been postings of various business owners' traffic statistics which show that currently, 40-60% of visitors in both social and commercial areas have payment info on file (PIOF will also be acceptable in lieu of Verification). So those businesses which will be forced to move to Adult sims are aware that possibly 30-40% of their shopping traffic will be unable to follow... and in this global recession, a loss of 30-40% of income means a non-viable business.

I cashed out most of my Ls this week. Felt pretty good, actually :)
