I see RGB for a cat tail that I own to change the colours of the tail but how do I know the codes for each number I know the 255 255 255 is for white but how do i find out the colours and codes to change it Also the tail never came with a chart or notecard stating the different colour codes

I am sure somebody will chime in soon with an explanation of the theory of RGB codes, but for starters try this list: http://www.pitt.edu/~nisg/cis/web/cgi/rgb.html

Here is a neat little tool.. it has a little "eye dropper" that you can drag over anything to help match RGB codes. http://colorcop.net/

255 255 255 = max red, max green, max blue = white
Each value is in the range 0 to 255, where 0 is none of the color and 255 is the full color.
You can estimate the values for the color you want. E.g. if you want full (bright) green, the values will be 0, 255, 0. If you want mid green, they will be 0, 128, 0. Bright cyan = 0, 255, 255. And so on.
Suppose you get close to the color you want, but you want a touch more red in it, either increase the first value, or decrease the 2nd and 3rd values.
[added] They are not codes. They are the amounts of each color.

Right-click and EDIT your tail. Click the MORE button on the editor window and click the CONTENTS tab... Look inside it to see if there's a notecard explaining how the creator has the color change setup for it. I don't recall ever seeing something in SL that uses true RGB values for color change (0-255), I've only seen items that use hexadecimal values.

Assuming you have mod perms -
Right click > edit > texture tab > then click 'color'. You will see the RGB top left of this window. You can also select the eye dropper tool at the bottom of this window and then click on other objects to get their colour information.
You can of course also use this window to get the RGB values of a colour you like. Just drag your cursor around over the different colours in the middle of the window, and the RGB values will be displayed to the left.
ETA: This of course finds the colour of the prim, not the colour of a texture.

Well, while you've got it in the Editor: click the Texture tab and click the Color box to open the Color Picker window. Note the Red, Green, and Blue values. Send spare L$s to Qie Labs, care of... nevermind.

The numerals can be decimal or hexadecimal, but neither is more "true" than the other. LSL can handle either notation, and there's a good chance that many objects will accept either notation without any extra programming. Of course, if something is expecting a combined number (i.e. one number specifying all three values), it's much easier to deal with the hexadecimal.

I've only just realised what you are trying to do, Starling. Sorry!
If you create a prim and then follow the instructions in my first post, you can have a play about with selecting different colours on that prim and then the RGB values will be displayed in the window mentioned. It's best to make sure the texture of that created prim is 'blank'.

I have a freebie at my store that has a script in it that gives you the RGB values of whatever color you choose to set the prim at
I have to see if it is transfer or not... comes in handy for those hard to guess colors

An object called the "Color Cube" is available in one of the gadget boxes at YadNi' junkyard. Also while there, there's a selection of building stuff on one wall dat includes a wall sized thing with a select of colors (the ol' web safe ones, I think) with their RBG codes. Handy for a quick set of numbers.

Skidz Primz used to do a freebie bag which had a colour chart in with a nice swatch of colours with their RGB numbers. It was near the class on Snow Crash but I think theyve moved to Skidz Isle now.

When you pick the color on a prim the rgb values are listed in the color palette window.
