How many (there that's the question out of the way now for the rant) times do I have to be unable to log into SL, or get booted from my land because the server is going down, or be unable to access other regions within SL because those regions servers are down (seems to be an awful lot of red on the map recently)..before I go to LL and say.."Oi..can I have some money back folks or a discount on the next tier payment.." I pay a rather staggering £ 173.68 per month to LL, that's $346.30 (granted that's ONLY $295.00 going to LL, the other $51.30 goes on VAT), and that's $L 91,765..which in other words is a ' rather nice plot of land'. This last week I've been working on a few important projects and have been 'buggered about something terrible' (it's an old English saying..) by LL and I'm getting well cheesed off by it..hence 'the rant' So has anyone actually gone to LL and mentioned the 'C' word (compensation gang..'compensation') and if so how did they respond..? Perre PS I could probably also mention the HUGE SLEx downtime earlier in the week..but I wont bother. PPS You've probably guessed the reason I'm here 'ranting'..it's because I can't (yet again) log into SL at the moment...

I understand where you are coming from Perre...
My SL experience has been surprisingly stable for months now, that was until this last week. Since these updates (or downdates as they seem to be) I have crashed frequently and randomly, had screen freezes and all sorts of other problems.
My investment in SL is miniscule in comparison to yours with a moderate amount of land and three business interests, but all the same money is being lost from sales, from loss of productive time etc.
I have no idea if anyone has brought this issue up with LL before but to me it seems perfectly reasonable. Isn't this platform provided as a "service" to allow land ownership and business development. When paying for a service in the UK it has to be "fit for purpose for which it was sold" otherwise compensation/refund can be claimed. The Sale and Supply of Goods Act (whichever year it was) probably covers this...

I have to totally agree with you. As for tier payments.. you win the cake. I know there are residents who pay a few thousand a month in tiers and some have VAT on top of that. I couldn't imagine the frustrations after spending that much money to have to deal with all the problems and not get anything in return in compensation and a 'We're sorry'.
I remember reading a thread somewhat similar to this one. Somewhere in the mile long TOS is says something about refunds/compensation after a outage of 24 hours or more. So that's where they are covered. it was up for 3 hours.. then down for only 20 mins and back up for an hour then off.. etc etc(i think ya get the point).
As for the Slex, maybe you should go to the slex forums and rant there, as they have no affiliations with LL. That sucked too, but only so much you can do. When you run only one server without backup parts laying around failures do happen.

That cunningly crafted document known as the Terms of Service is actually quite fiendish.
Basically, you've agreed to pay Linden Lab for a service which:
A. May or may not work at any given time.
B. May or may not allow you to create anything.
C. May or may not allow you to save something once you've managed to create it.
D. May or may not allow you to use the thing you've just created ever again.
E. May or may not allow you to move from place to place.
F. May or may not cause you to appear in the shape of a short-bus female in tacky clothing.
and finally,
G. May or may not be here tomorrow.
In short, you're paying several wheelbarrows full of money for a service that gives you absolutely NO guarantees about anything...err...except for your Intellectual Property rights...and you're pretty much on your own, there, too.
Wheeee.

Wheeee. You missed: H. May not be responsible for your less than perfect home phone wiring. I. May not be able to help your halfprice ISP's inability to keep you connected properly. J. May not be able to guarantee your 4yo office spec PC can keep up with graphics upgrades. K. May not allow for compatibility with all the minority "superior" operating systems.

Perre, I feel your pain. You may want to write a very polite and concise letter to Mr. Philip Rosedale, who is the CEO of Linden Lab. It's easy to find his mailing address on the lindenlab.com web site. on edit: Never mind, here is his address:
Linden Lab 945 Battery Street San Francisco, CA 94111
