OK, this is probably a stupid question, but I am gonna ask anyway.
Does anyone know if it's possible to install and run SL from a thumb drive?
Thanks!

That depends; what is a thumb drive?
You'd have thought that, being a software engineer I'd have heard of it, but I'm really feeling like a prize chump now. EDIT: okay so googled it and it's just what Americans call USB flash drive. The answer is "probably, but it would be damn slow to load and run". Better off just copying from your C: drive to the USB drive, and then simply copying it to the C: drive of whatever computer you happen to be on at the time. _____________________

When I first started SL I am sure I saw something about running SL from a CD, so it might well be possible to run it from a thumb drive (which I assume is a flash drive or memory stick in other parlance).

lol. Yeh We Americans just gotta be different!
I would think that if SL does not install any files into the registry or Windows directory then it would be fine to run it off of a thumb drive or CD. I hope it's possible! It sure would be nice! Thanks! |

After a little more digging around, I found the following site that explains how to run SL from a thumb/flash drive:

Thumb drive / flash drive / memory stick - all familiar terms in the Antipodes *sighs* we Australians have to be tri-lingual just to understand the 'English' speaking world! Great question though, and good to know the answer too.

Didn't some kid in Holland stick his thumb in a dyke to save Holland from being flooded?

Don't feel bad I'm American and didn't even know what it was, i thought everyone called them flash drives. ![]() _____________________

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut. |

Shhhh. Don't tell my boss, but I run SL from my jump drive while at work. It keeps me from having to install it on work's computers. I only do it when I'm working graveyard shift, but it runs like a dream. Unfortunately, they do not have Quicktime or even a decent video card on the work computers, but I can still stream audio and shop and chat.
So, um, yes, you can run SL from a jump drive. Just don't let your boss catch you. |

Don't forget that whatever portable drive you run SL from, it will leave a lot of files (that are often very interesting for network/IT admin types to look at or read) on the C: drive of Windows machines. Especially if you have chat/IM logging turned on.

Yes, the installer programs are small enough and would Fit easily on any USB Data Stick ("Thumb Drive", "Jump Drive"
of One Gig or larger.Angel. |
