Does anyone know if it is possible to delete an account from the database ? When i go Search / People / type in the name, the account doesn't come up anymore ? I wanted to get in touch with an old friend but don't understand what happened.

If someone cancels an account or gets removed by LL for bad behavior, they won't show up in Search.

Yes you can also have your own account deleted.
I think you need to actually call in to do it.
I do not know why people do it... but they do.

I have several old alts that I've cancelled in the past, a couple more than a year ago. Just the other night I found them all still listed by searching for them in the All tab.

I changed the name of my utility robotic minimalist black ball alt recently, by cancelling its old account and creating a new one. I wanted to give it a characterless, austere and functional name. That way it won't get above itself!!
