Linden Bulks up on Hires for Enterprise and Government

Linden Lab hasn't made official announcements, but it seems like the company is staffing up to make organizations feel more welcome in Second Life. Massively has reported this week that Linden has hired Amanda van Nuys as the Director of Enterprise Marketing at Linden Lab. Van Nuys previously served as VP of Corporate Marketing at Linden CEO Mark Kingdon's old agency Organic, Inc. Earlier this month, Massively also picked up a report that Linden had brought on Scott Sechser, former Operations Manager at the White House, as its Government Accounts Manager. In September, Linden brought on 18-year IBM veteran Dave Kamalsky as a Product Manager to help bring Second Life to the enterprise.

In Kingdon's keynote at Virtual Worlds London, he outlined changes in the actual product of Second Life that would make it more suitable to enterpise and goverrnment use, not the least of which were an exclusive partnership with Rivers Run Red for enterprise tools and a promise to beta test Second Life behind the firewall early next year. It looks like Linden is hoping to have plenty of enterprise interest--and support--by the time that happens.

They've identified their preferred user base and are getting ready to go after them. Actually a rare logical business move on their part.

I think one of the main problems SL has is believing their own hype, Mitch Kapor said:

"The pioneer era in Second Life is beginning to draw to a close. It has been five years and we are at the beginning of a transition and I think it is an irrevocable transition. And I am hoping what you see now is a slide of a technology adoption curve, a classic bell curve that shows early adopters on the left and then a set of pragmatists as we move from left to right and so on…"

But it's not down to what Mitch thinks or says, however true he would like it to be. I think of SL as coming out of the 'testing stage' in 2006 when they first allowed free accounts in, this was the start of the 'pioneer stage' not 2/3s through it, I can only guess but I believe it will be another 3 to 5 years before the 'pioneers' allow pragmatists to get to grips with their wild west. For if the customer base doesn't want this they won't take it, and if you beat them with a stick to make them take, which it seems is M's role in SL, they will eventually either put up bigger barricades or leave town, one will delay the process, the other will leave no customer base left for the process to develop.

They're counting on continued churn, I think. As some leave, new ones appear who know nothing of SL's past history, will not know anything was different. Some will put down roots and help shape SL into LL's new vision, just as you guys shaped it's old one.

I thought it would be the old customers you keep, that become apart of the development stage, they ease the transition, if you only have new customers, doesn't that just mean your replacing pioneers ready for change, with new pioneers who will start the process over?

It so reminds me of how some people run a business in SL it's self. Ok I've built a club, everyone come. Why? there has to be a good reason to go, presently SL is offering half a club built with badly unaligned prim, messy textures, tons of lag and a DJ who thinks a good time is firing particle poofers off every 5 seconds and gesturing Whooooo!

Ach mein gott....

So now it all makes sense.

The people leading LL have a limited vision of what SL is capable of and what has yet to be done by us. They think we are through. All us originals and all the awesome people to come since are in rinse and repeat cycle (Kinda like people still opening Malls everyday in SL for some reason...), no one is pushing the envelope and expanding the SL horizon in a way that LL feels would be beneficial to the direction they wish SL to grow in to meet the new user base they wish to become SL.

I do not even think they care if we innovate any longer if it is not pulling in real world out of SL attention.

How sad. :(

See, look at what Mitch said again.

If you replace pioneers ready for change with new pioneers who will start the process over, what do you get?

Answer: A new direction. A new vision. A SL that will change in this new direction with the new pioneers who are literally starting the process over.

It's about time they started catering to hardcore trekkies. Enterprise based SL will be awesome. Set phasers to stun!

Aren't the hardcore trekkies at that stage of their life now, that they're worried if they'll keep their jobs this year, that they may have to dip into Britney's college fund to help feed the cat?

One possible explanation is that if your product doesn't sell as well as you'd like on the market, on the voluntary part of the economy, where products need to either please consumers or make profits for businesses, you sell it to governments, where it doesn't need to work well or be cost effective.

*reads the OP and skips everything else* All it means is that M is ready to try to pry Phil's cod piece away from it via insurrection.

Either that or M's decided that he needs more layers of protection from us lowly residents.
