if your character has alot of prims on it (animal, furry, sculpted, anything besides normal), go to preferences, and turn Object Mesh slider. it makes a HUGE difference on all the settings. i relize this is meant for computers to run the game better, however, my avatar loks insanely bad on even the second highest setting. is there anyway to force other people to see my char on the highest mesh setting?

No. They might have their preferences set a certain way to improve their own computer's performance.

I normally max the object mesh and avatar sliders, no matter what else I trim back. SL just doesn't look good at all without those at max values.
No, there is no way to force anyone else to use the client slider settings that make your avatar or your build look good. We can't even set Windlight environmental settings on a per-sim basis yet. Personally, I don't WANT some bling-happy club hopper that just doesn't feel complete without 20 particle scripts and a thousand-torus hairdo to be able to force the settings on me that will make me see her "in all her glory". If I am trimming back on some setting, it's usually because I can't play with that setting any higher. _____________________

"... is there anyway to force other people to see my char on the highest mesh setting?" Being able to force others to devote CPU/GPU/RAM specifically to rendering _you_ might (especially if they had a low-end system) make those around you unable to run SL at all. And people being people, it's probably a fair assumption that a good percentage of _other_ folks would _also_ crank up the 'make me look good to everyone else no matter how much it makes their computer emit smoke' setting(s) - effectively compounding the problem exponentially for everyone. Additional reading on the general concept can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons Good luck! ![]() [Edit: looks like a few of us hopped on this all at once ] |

This is also one reason ARC is iffy, the values and effects depend a lot on the viewer settings... which kinda means "adjust your settings!"
Too many times I have seen people complain about lag and yet have everything maxed and are using 4 heart/star/neko smile poofers on max spam... _____________________

No. The whole point of having the adjustments is so that each person can adjust the settings on their viewer in accordance with _their_ hardware capabilities and personal preferences. Being able to force others to devote CPU/GPU/RAM specifically to rendering _you_ might (especially if they had a low-end system) make those around you unable to run SL at all. as i said in my first post, i KNOW what it's for. you don't need to talk like i'm that much of a retard However, no condescension or offense was intended, I assure you. I even liberally applied (I thought) enough to get that across... it looks like I was unsuccessful. If I offended, though, I sincerely apologize.- Tengu ![]() |

From the answers you've gotten so far, the common perception seems to have been that you didn't understand the implications... or you wouldn't have asked the question. However, no condescension or offense was intended, I assure you. I even liberally applied (I thought) enough to get that across... it looks like I was unsuccessful. i keep all my setting's sliders as far to the left as i can, unless i am at a place where the build is exceptional and i don't want to miss out on it's beauty. what your avatar looks like means nothing to me. avatars that make use of a nice skin and basic attachments look really good. everyone else looks pixelly, especially furries and dragons and stuff, but if that's how they want to go through SL, then that's their choice.

I don't think any of my graphics settings are maxed out. I have objects mesh on high and avatar on mid, trees are zero, flexiprims low and particles & local lighting always off.

Well if someone sets their object mesh slider all the way down they will look bad to themselves if they wear a lot of prims. So if you stand next to a dragon they would have their slider set high. If you are next to someone wearing system hair and system shoes then they might see you as a low detail mess..I mean mesh. I like to set object detail high while I turn down the water, tree and land details. I hate Linden trees. I usually turn them off.

The point of having adjustments is to be able to adjust them. I understand that you want everyone to see you at your best, but if the price of that is someone being stuck in such terrible lag that they can't even log off, it's kind of a drag for the other guy, no? (I had this happen once. Prim mermaid tails combined with massive prim hair in a room full of dancing avs. Not a good time.)
You might want to consider having two versions of your primary look. You could have your full-out fancy avatar, for your pleasure and that of those who have the right settings, and a simpler one for use in crowds or laggy settings. There isn't going to be a better way to do this until we all have the same computer budget. |

I'm pretty much the same way regarding other avatars. I have my sliders set to allow me to enjoy the environment to the degree that it does not start lagging badly. But as far as details on avatars, I rely so much on my Mystitool's AV detector for who is around me and names, etc. that I rarely look around much, especially in a crowd. (I began this habit when I worked at a club and greeted people who came in. MUCH easier to do with Mystitool's AV notification. I got to the point that I began sending drinks to people by just pulling up their profiles rather than trying to locate them in the crowd. |

I've allways had the detail sliders set to max even on 'Old Laggy', where I have to keep my draw distance down to 64 metres.

So here's a thought...In the RC 1.20 client, when you mute someone, they are rendered grey.
Is the data sent to the client first which then renders a grey avatar or is the fact that the av should be rendered grey sent? That would be one way to stop the display if a high ARC av if it works as the latter. As for the particle poofers, my favourite is Ctrl Shift Alt = Said Sassy as she quietly put her 174 prim hair up in a bun and discretely popped on a baseball cap. |

I swear by SL as a visual and artistic outlet... Even though I'm a cruddy failure as an artist. (=_=)
But, anywayz, I'm here to see what I can see and I'm greatly drawn to beautiful builds and avatars. Add chat on top of it and it's double-win for me. I keep all settings maxed out, draw at 256, impostors off, and I even have RenderTreeLOD set to 10. (^_^) One of my favorite RL hobbies is photography and my favorite subject is abandoned urban and industrial sites. SL, especially mainland, fits that niche well. I could never risk the chance of missing a shot just because I wanted a couple extra FPS. (^_^) The only problem I ran into lately was my primsuit. Someone had told me lately it had 'holes' in it and I didn't see them. I thought about mesh detail and tried the sliders out, and, yeah, most of the darned thing disappeared into my avatar leaving me nearly nakie! (>_< I'm gonna have to make adjustments for the next time I consider wearing that thing. (=_=)y_____________________
Somewhere in this world; there is someone having some good clean fun doing the one thing you hate the most. (^_^)y
