Hi,
I recently bought some land that was fairly close to Linden water. Basically one whole corner of this sim was Linden water(yes I am sure, I checked). I purchased land that was NOT water front...but not too far from it. I could actually see the water from my land...and it was a nice view. I did not purchase the land from Lindens.
I've been gone about a week, and I went back to my land and almost all of the Linden water is gone..and its been replaced by beach and buildings..and is owned by someone other than Lindens.
Stupid me...I guess I thought that if the sim had Linden water covering part of it...as though it was the ocean..that it would stay that way...
So..Lindens can just up and change something like that that effects everyone in the sim?
Thanks...

Best bet is to rent on a privet sim and get water access that way

The only way to keep the view is to own it.
If you own the land on the edge of the sim adjacent to an ocean sim, it's fairly safe that the view ahead won't change. But in this case, you owned land in a sim that happened to have some water and someone developed most of it.
You could rent on a private estate, but that comes with its own risks. Not going to get into all that, I'm sure someone else will.

What sort of water was it? There is protected water, such as true oceanfront, and the lakes. Then there is land that can be lowered enough to reach below the water level. If that land is owned by residents, it can be changed any time. Much of that type of water gets covered over by prim beaches or islands.
There are also unfinished land mass edges that LOOK like waterfront, until a new sim gets dropped in front of it. You can lose estate land waterfront like that too, if the owner decides to add or juggle islands.

Thanks... it sounds to me like either the owner sold that piece of land and the new owner terraformed to bring it above the water level (lindens had nothing to do with it by the way) or the owner terraformed just because it is "system water" doesn't mean that the lindens own it or control it.

Well I would have sworn it said "protected" when I saw that it was Linden water.
This is Lucasian sim by the way if anyone wants to look. If you look at the map, the entire northwest corner was water when I bought my land.....you can see where there is a big spot of land there now, and its all moved out from the coastline.
AND......... if you look at the property for sale in the southwest corner, the guy has it advertised as "protected waterfront" and that land is nowhere near the water now.
I know in the big scheme of things this is small potatoes. But it sucks.!! They really ought to put that kind of info on the FRONT page of info for newbies buying land.
and btw..it did say "LINDEN" water..didnt say system water or whatever.
oh well, live and learn..lol

I have lot in sim near me and it is advertised as waterfront. There is no waterfront even close for over 10 sims away. Buyer beware is all I can say.

Unfortunately, even if it's owned by Lindens and says "protected", it can change. As a rule, on mainland continents, there's one full water sim between land and real (sort of) protected ocean. If there isn't one, be prepared for it to eventually come up for auction.

Maybe others have had a different experience, but, for me, the true Linden water adjacent to my land hasn't changed in three years. Therefore, in this case, I don't believe the Lindens changed the land in the sim. Lucasian is a mainland sim. Normally, the Linden water level is at 20m (as is the case in this sim) and the terraforming limits are normally +/-4m. The land in the Northwest corner of Lucasian is around 20m. This means that that land owner can raise the land (making it solid ground) or lower the land (making the Linden water appear). Truely Linden-protected land will be owned by Governor Linden, named "Protected Land", and be in the "Maintenance" group (as is Wissendon to your North). It may also be unnammed (blank or an empty string) and not be grouped but still owned by Governor Linden (as is Okinu to the North of my land).
When determining whether or not land is truly 'Linden Land', make sure to check for these things.

Some general guidelines:
If there is no sim past the edge of your sim today, and it looks like a beautiful expanse of ocean, but you can't enter that area, then it is a place that a sim COULD appear at any moment. --- Used to be that the Mainland's oldest continents had squared off edges. The Lindens eventually stuck a ring of sims along those edges, adding "natural" coastlines, and in some cases causing parcels that used to be bordering on water to be as much as half a sim "inland".
Land that says it is "Maintenance Land" or "Protected Land" and is owned by Governor Linden generally won't change much. But a new road or a river or a railway *could* appear there without notice, over night. People have had land on both sides of such protected strips, and have been surprised by the sudden appearance of a wall-like road cutting straight across the sim.
Land owned by Governor Linden but NOT marked as "Maintenance" or "Protected" is most likely land that LL has reclaimed, and it WILL evenually be auctioned off.
Any other parcels of land are subject only to whatever covenants guide their use. For 99% of the mainland, that means anything goes. A beautiful forest today could be flaming toilet plungers tomorrow. Private Island sims tend to have covenants that restrict what can be built, and with a good landlord, that will make things more stable. But if the landlord sells the sims or chooses to change the covenant, all bets are off.
In short, never bet on the view not changing. Change itself is the only constant thing in SL. If you don't own the land between yourself and any desired view, someone else can, and most likely will, change that view, without notice.

Scouted around a bit. Lucasian is on the north coast of Gaeta. To its north is a Linden protected-water sim, Wissendon. That's pretty likely to remain water forever. Same with Yijae to the northwest. To the northeast there's a beach sim, Malitz, that may have been mostly underwater before development.
There's also a sim to the east, Danascott, that may have looked like water not too long ago, having simply not yet been created--it has an auction ID assigned but of course those full-sim auctions are on hold for now. But I kinda think Gaeta terraforming was complete some time ago, so that's probably not the source of the surprise.
Unless they screwed up, sims like Malitz prior to auction would be mostly underwater and would show as owned by Governor Linden, group Maintenance (as Danascott is now), but would not say Protected Land in the (Linden-supplied) "Name" field (as Wissendon does now).

Well seeing how there isn't squat I can do about it..I'll just enjoy my land and ignore the view..haha. That..and remember that nothing in SL is a guarantee.
Thank you everyone for your input on this. I do appreciate it.
