Does Windows Vista finally work with SL fine now ? If so how did you get it to work because I'm still having issues with my Video Card when I just got a new computer from the holidays.

What video card?
A video card has nothing to-do with the operating system. You may have a new computer but it dose not mean it is has a SL compatible video card.
Quick add, Yes Second life has been stamped by Linden Lab as Vista Compatible.

It works in Vista, but I don't think I know a single Vista + Nvidia GeForce user who hasn't had at least a few crashes.

I got Vista with a new computer in october, and from the start SL crashed less than on the XP machine.
This tuesday I had a new GeForce 8600GTS installed and since then am using the windlight viewer only. Not a single crash since then, so I guess Vista+Windlight is a good mix.

Usually I hook up to RL via an XP comp but I do get hooked up via a new Vista comp sometimes. Apparently the performance is vastly superior with Vista - no doubt about it. SL crashes less. But there has been an occasional problem of total computer crashes with Vista. When that happens you need to restart comp with the Vista disc, keeping fingers crossed and hoping for the best. I guess that when all your spanking new computer can do is display a black screen with a flashing white line in the top left hand corner, it's a bit of a bummer! But that's not an SL issue.

Vista, GeForce and SL has worked just fine for me from the beginning. Yesterday installed Vista SP1 and things are still running just fine. I notice SL lag, but never a crash... ever. (regular or windlight) I seem to be fairly lucky - I don't see all the crashes many complain about with Windows. I think a lot of it is 3rd party apps and drivers - the more of that stuff the more chance there will be trouble.

the Vista that comes with a new computer is loaded with all sorts of unnecessary items that lag SL for you. it seems to require running through several programs before actually making it to the users end, which causes severe lag in-game (as well as just regular use). i went out and bought a stand alone Vista, reformatted (replacing the vista that came with the puter) and i went from a standard 1.5-4 fps to an amazing 10-25 fps regularly! if i get into a high lag area, well.... it's still a low fps. so i just stay away from those. the upcoming alt party will be a prime example of a lagfest, and my fps will not rank in the 20's, but probably the single digits if choose to attend. in other words, sometimes it's the game, but mostly it's your operating system that is the issue. video card is not the main player IF you can see SL at all.

Not all Video cards are the same. 1st : what card are you using? 2nd : did you update the drivers? 3rd : what are the "issues?" Will not load at all? Flashinging blocks of color? Freezes/chrashes and "VPU recovery" errors? Sits in the corner and crys? You have to slap it and call it names before it will start?
If you don't know the card you have then the answer to the second question is going to be no. If you need to know, run "dxdiag" and on the 3rd tab from the left (usually) labled "Display 1" you will find the card Name under the Device group and the driver Date and Version under the driver group.

How do you check the fps? I have been running Vista since I joined SL. People have told me Vista is more laggy, but I don't know the difference. I started with a 'clean' machine' with all the rubbish stripped out. I have crashed a few times but usually on a bad day it's down to SL because everyone else is complaining too.
However SL has been really laggy for me recently, but again it seems I'm not the only one.

ctrl-alt-1 it reveals all sorts of ingame stats on usage. FPS is listed up at the top of the list, under 'basic'. mine is on at all times. that way, i know when it's lagging even before my av does.

i run vista 64 bit. my machine was build for FPS gaming and Vanguard. 4 gb ram, 8800GTX, core 2 processor, 680i motherboard, etc.. Vista runs fine BUT the 2 things i hate are this. The time from a boot to being able to load a program is around 10 minutes because of all the disk io that occurs from search, prefetch, etc.. The second thig i hate is i can't just use my onboard sound for voice headset and my x-fi for everything else like you can in xp. Hopefully this is something LL will make work.
Every few days i appear to get full system freeze ups. this is where everyhing just freezes, sounds goes into infinite stutter. all input output is locked. have to reboot with the power button. Don't know if its vista, hardware or what.

Ive been running Vista Ultimate x64 for 5 months or so now with no issues in sl other than linden generated bugs.
General stability of the OS is excellent in my case, certainly way more stable under stress than XP.

From: shiney Sprocket It works in Vista, but I don't think I know a single Vista + Nvidia GeForce user who hasn't had at least a few crashes. Shiney, I don't know a single SL user who hasn't had a lot more than a few crashes. SL is the single most crash-prone application I've ever seen in 3+ decades on this planet. Crashing is just a fact of life in SL, and happens with more or less equal frequency across all operating systems and hardware configurations. There's nothing unique about the combination of Vista plus GeForce that equals SL crash. SL crashes anyway, Vista or no Vista, GeForce or no Geforce. That said, the answer to your question, Eddie, is yes. SL works just fine with Vista, and has for quite some time. That is to say, it works as well under Vista as under any other OS. Whether or not you can actually call that "fine" is entirely debatable. SL has its problems. What you need to make sure of is that your hardware and drivers are up to snuff. What video card do you have, and when was the last time you updated its drivers?

Don't know if its vista, hardware or what. wow I'm so glad it isnt just me I get thes odd mouse freezes in sl now..the game isnt frozen..just the mouse..I have to reboot the entire os. OI also have this "pop" where my mouse view slingshots from where im standing out to the next sim. I had my main sound driver work first try and after that never again. now I use my headphones to speak but have to listen thru the speakers..very frustrating. Yes booting up takes forever..and I have bought games like Oblivion(not made for Vista) that i was able to get running..while games that were made "vista compatible" Like Sim City Societies won't even get to the loading screen. Every now and then i get this urge to pop in my ripped XP CD and forget i ever tried Vista. ~Lana Tomba

From: Lana Tomba Every now and then i get this urge to pop in my ripped XP CD and forget i ever tried Vista. You're not the only one. Vista's acceptance has been so underwhelming, that Bill Gates has been quoted several times recently, talking about maybe pushing Windows 7 out the door a year earlier than planned. We could very well see it next year. Oh, and you meant your legit XP CD, right? Best not to talk about such things.

Only crashes I get are when SL stops talking to the client or on failed teleport...redmap and then crash to desktop rather than a graceful exit. Now with my old ATI X1300.....it would crash if I zoomed in too close to an object under vista. Vista Ultimate, all patches GF 8800GT/512MB Been running vista since 6 months after release (even when LL said it might work but they wouldn't support it) with no real issues, on both ATI and nVidia cards. Seems more stable than on the XP Pro install I had on the same hardware with SL.
