Hi This is undoubtedly a total newbie question, but inquiring minds want to know. I did a search but it didn't come up with much.
What is the purpose of the moving red arrow in some sims? The one that moves around and doesn't seem to be pointing at anything in particular. Also, in some places there seems to be a vertical red beam of light coming from the sky to the ground.
I noticed this in some sims and not others, or present in one sim on one day and not the next.
Is this to do with me, or something in that zone?

When you have a location selected in your map the red arrow is pointing towards that location... so you either haven't teleported to it, or tried to teleport and ended up somewhere close but not at the location.
EDIT: Oh, and the beam is at the location....
EDIT 2: Never knew you could click the arrow to make it go away!

I only just learned this recently and it made my day: To get rid of the red arrow just click on it.

I was wondering about that red beam too! I've also noticed people walking around some sims. What are they for?

A quick note about TeleHubs...
It used to be that when you teleported to a location in SL, you wouldn't arrive directly at your chosen destination. Instead, you would arrive at a central hub, or TeleHub, and then you would need to fly to your final destination. The red arrow and beam were quite handy for finding your way.
TeleHubs are no longer required, but some places still use them. So if you're teleporting to a new spot using a LandMark and don't see what you were trying to find, you can use that red arrow to lead you to the correct spot.
To see this in action try teleporting to one of the Caledon Sims. For instance, here is a link to my parcel in the Caledon Highlands. After teleporting you'll need to travel West a ways to reach my parcel.

Shop owners should be aware, in particular, if their sim has a telehub. I've often teleported into the middle of who-knows-where looking for a particular shop. If I end up somewhere that is really not the place I was looking for, I'll use the arrow to find my way.
OTOH, some folks use the teleport hub coordinates to "lead you to their place", which may be across the sim. Not sure how many places I haven't visited because I didn't want to fly around an entire sim looking for their place.
