Hi,

I just got myself a headset, and it works fine. I can hear myself over the headset in several programs (Audacity, WMP, etc).

When I go into SL, however, and speak, I see the animated graphic that shows I'm speaking:
(( >o< )) <--best I can do for a visual
(or tapping the mic) but I don't hear it in my headphones.

Is there some setting that I need to change so I can hear myself speak?

Thanks :)

I dont hear myself speak unless I im a fight and screaming so loud the person has to remove their headset ;) j/k

Why do you need to hear yourself speaking? I usaully ask if the person can hear me and carry on.

I suppose I don't *need* to hear myself speak, but considering that's the case in every other program I used, I assumed it would also be the case in SL.

It would also allow me to tweak any levels myself without someone saying "what??" a few times (ok, volume up) or "OUCH" (alrighty, volume down...)

While I realize there's the little graphic mic test in preferences > voice, I'd prefer it as an option and thought it might be... at least to test. Ah well.

Thanks :)

If you can hear yourself through your headphones is because 1) your headphones are cheap, 2) there's something wrong with your program or soundcard, 3) it's actually the voices in your head that you're hearing.
A good pair of headphones with microphone will never allow sound from the mic to bleed into the speakers. If you can't hear yourself in SL, that's because it's working as it should.

Thanks for the clarification, Cal. As for the voices in my head, they don't typically come through a headset; though they do often dare me to kill others for sarcastic commentary. Good thing I can usually tune them out :)

Not true, many programs will feed the sound from the mic back into your headphones. It helps you attenuate your voice so you don't shout. Afterall when you talk without headphones you can hear yourself so it's natural that it happens when you are using a mic/headphone setup.

In a recording environment that’s true. But in SL you don’t want to hear yourself through the headset because it causes a delay that sounds like echo. Some of the voice morphing apps do that and its very annoying. If others can hear you then its working properly.

Isabela FTW. I have no answer, just noting a brilliant reply. Well done.

I haven't used voice in SL, but in the programs where I have, it has been nice to hear myself for the reasons stated - I can hear any weird distortion or effects and adjust my volume better. It can be a little distracting, though. A few times while playing team FPS's like CounterStrike I've gotten a slight delay, so I'm hearing myself about a second after I speak. It drives you crazy.

Voice Feedback

No voice feedback is just plain dumb. Look at reviews of cellphones.. one of the biggest complaints is that the feedback is very low, which results in shouting into the phone.
There should be no echo because it should be all local. i.e. straight from mic to headphone. The echo is probably the delay of the voice being transmitted to SL and then back again. That's plain and simple BAD PROGRAMMING!

Well I’m sure Vivox is anxiously awaiting your résumé since you know how best to program their application. :p And what cell phones use special 3D immersion? Hell, skype doesn’t even feedback my voice. I have tried using voice changing software and to hear yourself through the application makes no sense. But regardless back to the OP. If voice is properly setup in SL you should not hear your voice.
