apologies if this topic has been covered before but I can't seem to find anything on it

whenever I try to view streaming video in SL, the dialogue tells me that the video is playing but all I see on the television screen is the land's logo, no video

all my video settings in Preferences are as they should be and I am running Flash 10

is there anything else I need to do?

note: this also extends to when I play an arcade machine that links to a flash version of the game in the browser window, (like Pac-Man) the flash game just shows up as a little yellow square, I can view and play the game just fine in Firefox

Have you got the latest version of quicktime installed?

Check the media texture. That's a good place to start, anyway.

There are quite a few things that go into video. Quicktime, and media texture, as has already been noted. Also, if you are on group land, the player, or some accessory object (such as a tuner, remote, or player) may need to be deeded to the land. You may have to start the video at the player, and/or in the control panel at the lower left hand section of your screen.

Also, it's possible, if the system streams videos from some remote server it may not exist any more.

ok just to clarify, this isn't one media streamer on one piece of land, this is any and all, I've tried clicking on the television itself and using the control panel that comes up, as well as the media control on my SL taskbar

radio works just fine

how do I go about checking media texture?

also somewhat related but not really, I have a car, is it possible to put a radio in it? (ideally it would just overwrite the land's radio for the people in the car but not for everyone in the sim)

Audio/video is tied to the parcel, so anything you do is relevant only for that parcel.

Do you have video turned on in Preferences?
Can others see the video?
The media texture is in the About Land pane to be found by clicking the top bar parcel name.
First make sure of the basics - Preferences set to see video, video viewable by others.
Up-to-date QT.
Beyond that - could it be a bandwidth thing? Which viewer?

Could still be some accessory device. For example, the ever popular Freeview TV uses a "remote control" for operation on group owned land.

But if you've never been able to view video ever, in any situation, it's likely your client is configured wrong, or, you have a bandwidth problem.

As for a radio in a car--First you need to understand exactly what a media player (either video or audio) in SL actually is. It's not actually a player or receiver of any sort, but just a gadget to make it easy to change the media URLs in the about land-->media tab--Which only the owner, or an object owned by the owner can do.

So, to answer your question, could you have a working "radio" in your car? Yes--as long as you're driving it around on land you own. On the other hand, leaving your viewer set to play audio any time it's available will enable you to hear any media stream on any parcel you happen to be on--no radios or players of any sort required.

looking now, under the Media Tab on the About Land window, I'm not even seeing "see video" or "video viewable by others

whichever one each Sim uses

update, something must be wrong with my QUicktime as it wont even open on its own, seeks saying "Please Install Apple Application Support" guess my option for now is, see if I can get quicktime running, if I can then I'll see if video works on SL, if it doesn't then I'll go from here, thanks for all your help

thanks for that, it's not a big issue there, more a "would be cool if" thing

update: Quicktime is running fine, I was able to find the source url of the videos and download and play them so I'm just assuming its the bandwidth issue

UPDATE the final! it's working now, for some reason the solution was having a friend of mine log in to SL and be in the same room as me when I start the video

huh

Try edit-->preferences-->Streaming Preferences and put a check in the "Play Streaming Media When Available" box

I'm (still) as puzzled as you are...

Probably it was my irresistible charm that made it work...or magic or aliens. Seriously, I have no idea whatsoever, but as long as it works - hurray!

Right...
...which does not necessarily make them work either (as I had to witness once). However it appears most videos and/or TVs work now.

Theres no way that another AV's presence would make things automatically work for you. Though I'm glad you resolved your issue, don't be shocked if something comes of it in the future. In the future food for thought would consist of the type of land it's on, many times people that rent land forget to properly set up the TV/Remote and if it cant access the media URL then it'll do exactly what you were describing.

Quicktime is generally needed to be constantly updated or videos will not work. Occasionally graphics drivers do as well, though very rarely.

Clearing cache is always a good idea if your having issues, and making sure your bandwith is at an okay level in terms of transfer rates for video and audio.
