19Sep09 - If you open the bottom toolbar Search/All, and enter User's Manual, the first result is this wiki page, and then you can resize the search page on the bottom right corner to suit. So you can read the manual from within SL.

--------------------------
For the past month I have been working on a User's Manual for the v1.23 Viewer software:

https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User%27s_Manual
https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User%27s_Manual

I've got it about 60% complete, so I thought it was time to invite comments, and start offering a free "Manual opener" device (simple box that opens the URL when you click on it) and HUD.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Cerura/70/102/22

The first part, that's mostly done, covers the basics. Part 2, thats just getting started, will cover more advanced topics.

/me dons asbestos suit and waits for the incoming flames :-)

I haven't looked at it yet, but I am wondering: is this a work you intend to publish? If not, then why did you choose to write a manual instead of contributing to the Knowledge Base wiki?

(Understand, I'm not saying you SHOULD be contributing to the KB wiki. Frankly, I would be more inclined to do so if LL had EVER hired a tech writer worth 2cents, or managed any of their wikis like a real project. I'm just wondering why, if you are spending a boatload of time writing a manual for no money, you wouldn't just integrate with the other big volunteer documentation effort.)

Umm, if you go look, it *is* part of the wiki. The problem with both the wiki and KB in the past is they have tended to be a "random collection of pages".

By writing a standard user's manual format set of pages, I am doing several things:

- Finding holes in the documentation by listing every menu item, button, and window in the viewer, and giving an explanation of what it does.

- Linking together the existing content in a more organized way - where there is a good existing page, I just link to it, I dont re-write it.

- Creating a HUD for newbies that will open a manual direct from their screen
(which is missing from the Help menu)

This is extraordinaire well made! If I would be new, like I was in 2006, this would be the perfect source to get a clue about the essentials - central located infos/a real manual. Ah hehehe, and even this very funny video you loaded up. I did just a quick look, but it is a manual like it should be. And since it is on a wiki, it is a living manual, not static.

I find it perfect.

Thank you Wynochee, it was the work I did on the slapt.me site that got me started editing wiki pages, I found it fun, and have gone on to do more :-)

Well I hope we see it on the slapt wiki as we all know how important the independent side is as well and especially as LL tend to change stuff at a whim, it would be a shame to lose all your hard work :)

Somehow documenting the software is not as controversial as the adult changes, though if I learn how to export wiki pages I can try to do it.

Note, though, Lord, the SLapt site was not allowing me to upload images last I tried, and I use a lot in the manual (snapshots of all the viewer windows)

How dare you charge L$0 for that priceless information! I hope you're donating at least half of that to LL. And get them to read your manual why you are at it. They need all the help they can get.

Discovered you can Open it from Search
09-19-2009 12:13
Note added to first comment: you can open the manual from within Search/ All by entering:

User's Manual

then clicking the first link.

The search box is resizeable on the bottom right corner if you want to make it larger.

So anyone can use it without leaving SL, cool, huh?

(embedded videos dont seem to work though, I guess the built in browser doesnt have the features to play them, too bad Torley :-)
