What is the symbolism behind the Second Life logo of the eye in the palm of the hand?

Now that's actually a good question...
Something about the users both seeing and doing/creating things? It's sort of an ultra-condensed avatar?

We can see everything you do and say, and if you do something we don't like, we will slap you "upside da head" with no warning

(as Dr. Robert Langdon would say: symbols are what you make of them)

eye = seeing
hand = doing

(our world, our imagination, where almost everything is created by the residents (not counting the linden stuff))

Given that it is a Hamsa, but its use in SL seems to have nothing to do with anything about SL...

- I'm voting that somebody in the advertising firm they hired to do their branding saw it on a t-shirt at Starbucks while taking one of those 3-day coffee breaks graphic designers take when they have a 2-day deadline... and managed to con it off on Linden Labs as something creative, original, and inspiring of a virtual world we can peer into and create within.

Said designer, being largely uneducated about politics, religion, philosophy, history, math, language, geography, or science, like most such designers - probably never realized the symbol was anything more than 'street graffiti.'

A ferret in the hand is worth two in the kitchen.

Here's what Linden Labs says about the logo:

"The ancients believed that the protective eye-in-hand symbol brought good luck and good fortune. In Second Life®, the eye observes the vast virtual 3-D world, and the knowing hand shapes it."

I thought Robin came up with it.

And had a sense that it had to do with 'hand / eye' (as in: coordination, skills &c)

* * * * *

As logo's go, it's not bad at all.

Just imagine what it mighta been in someone else's hands...

They claim it is a hand. Bah. It's really the Southbound end of a Northbound Ostrich, with its head burried firmly in the sand, so it never has to listen to customers.

Too funny. I will forever see the symbol now as an Ostrich prosterior. That might keep me giggling for a good long time.

I'm pretty sure I'm not following this line of reasoning. :cool:

To me it looks a lot like Kokopelli's (the fertility god's) head, but it's made into a hand for reasons I'm not going to ponder.

It's a very old and widely used symbol, crossing over into many cultures. Quite interesting. http://www.darkfiber.com/eyeinhand/

Search the forums for hamsa or hand symbol to see some existing comments on the eye in hand symbol.
