Hi all,

I have a strange problem since a couple of days.
After closing SL the usual way one evening, I started Sl the next day. When I looked at my avatar it seems to be normal except for one thing: the face was black. There's no way I can change it in appearences. Eeven trying to log in with my other av I had the same result!
Has anybody a clue to what happened?
Any ideas are much appreciated
Thankx in advance,
Jaffe

What are your system specs.....and what graphics card do you have? That would help us find a solution.

Also...have you tried rebaking your textures? Once in a while when I log in I'll have some odd ball texture glitches and rebake will fix it. If you have an nVidia graphics card.....you could be experiencing a known issue with the drivers for that card. The only solution at present (if that's the problem) is to un-check pellatized textures when you log in.

To do this....open your client menu (ctrl/alt D will bring the advanced toolbar menu if you haven't done that already) Under advanced.......rendering....features.....un-check 'pelletized textures'. Then under character.....rebake textures. Hopefully this will solve the issue for you. ;)

I had a similar problem a week or so ago, except it was with my eyes instead of my whole face. The weird part about it was, everyone else saw that my eyes were black, too! Rebaking did fix it, for myself and everyone else.

The fact that everyone around me saw the same glitch I did suggests it's not a graphics driver issue.

nope, texture cache corruption issue is more likely, they're pulled from the users cache.

Multimonitor can cause various baked textures to upload all black (clear cache, log off, restarts SL and drag it on over to the *other* monitor and rebake - possibly 2-3 times - on relog).

Switching away/back to SL (especially when running it full-screen) can cause corruption of baked textures as well.

If rebaking won't help:
From: Kitty Barnett
1) Take off all clothing (probably want to be somewhere private )
2) Left-click on the "corrupted" skin and Ctrl-C to copy it
3) Create a new folder (the point here is that you can tell the copy from the original so this is just one easy way to do that) and Ctrl-V to paste a copy of the skin into there
4) Wear a newbie skin (there's some in the library)
5) Edit / Preferences - Network - Clear Cache and close SL & relog
6) Rebake
7) Wear the *copy* of the skin, do another clear cache and relog
8) Rebake

Not all of the steps are always necessary, but going through the whole elaborate thing gives you the best chance of making it work . If it works, delete the original skin and just wear the copy from then on.

Your puter will bake your avie's textures and then upload them back to the sim you're on which other people then download and use to render your avie.

If something goes wrong on your end, everyone will see the same glitch you do (as long as uploading them wasn't what went wrong obviously).

Had the same this with my socks the other day, your method works perfectly.

I would have thought so as well, but it doesn't explain how everyone else in the room with me saw the same corruption I did...

*points up to the second half of her previous post*

You take a picture of yourself, look at it on your puter and notice that it's perfect except for the fact that you have red eyes so you send the picture to a friend and ask them to look at it on their puter to see if you have red eyes for them as well. Since they're looking at the same picture, they're going to see the same thing you did.

Your puter bakes your avie's textures; when someone else sees you they'll see the same baked textures your puter baked. Unless there's a problem with uploading them to the sim the textures you see applied to your avie's mesh are going to be what other people will see.

If you notice a problem with your (or another) avie's shape on the other hand (ie the historical "zombie avie with no eyes in the sockets" or the "shredded jesus/scarecrow" problems) then the issue is entirely on your end and everyone else will see it normal.

kitty got it, but for a simpler clarification, everyones image of your av is based on what's in your local cache, which gets sent to the server.

it's one way to offload some traffic from the asset servers.

Ahhh... I did not know that! I thought everyone was sent a copy of my avatar data when I land somewhere.

That certainly explains why slower people (bandwidth-wise) tend to remain cloudy puffballs for me until they edit appearance.

I actually had a glitch recently where I was seeing myself as my regular av, but one of the other users stated I'd been "Ruthed." I was showing up as having a female body. He was telling me that to fix this, I could edit my av's settings (add or remove a garment, say)... but as he was telling me this, I loaded a different av and then went back to my regular av, and the problem resolved itself.
