We have just joined SL and are newbies. Everything was going smoothly up until yesterday. My partners avatar developed black bands around her neck, waist and ankles and no matter what she does they will not go away.

She has tried changing clothes, modifying her appearance, even uninstalling and reinstalling SL and it hasn't helped.

What is causing this and what should she do to fix it?

Believe me it is very frustrating because it effects the look of the avatar.

CTRL-ALT-R and give it a chance to reload. If it doesn't help, try one more time.

If it still doesn't help, CTRL-SHIFT-F7, wait a second, then CTRL-ALT-R.

If that doesn't work, then I don't know!

Er, if that doesn't work, try CTRL-ALT-F7 instead of CTRL-SHIFT-F7.

Maybe try changing skins? there are some decent enough free skins out there, and since you're new, you could even take advantage of some of the newbie free skin vouchers from some of the creators. You can find these in the search.

Another suggestion...get the Advanced menu up (CTL ALT D on a PC) and try the Character Tests. This should give you the default avatar shape and skin and you can start again - just make sure you have saved your shape, or at least written down the appearance slider settings first.

*nods* This is actually the most important question that needs to be answered. Example: Some issues, like ATI cards sometimes throw a fit and you'll want to turn off the VBO. Or in another, palettized textures.
