ok, I was at a club today for a live music show, now this group is a police tribute band, so I was there for like 4 songs. no talk from the singer? Very strange... Does anyone know if they are actually a live band, or just playing their cd's?
The lines between live muysic are so thin now I frankly get a bit confused for all the shows I go to... I don't mind this kind of thing if it is what it is, but at least don't lie/mislead about it.
This is the heading
"Fallout" the astounding Police Tribute Band in SL will be here at Honey Club singing LIVE!! The venue is just outside the club giving the best ever atmosphere. Come and listen to the band and join us in what will prove to be your best nite ever in SL.
I believe the "live" was it was recorded live and played now on SL ..??
Appreciate the 411.
I mean they were not bad, and I am a confirmed Police/Sting fan. (big time Sting fan - the now sting) The singer sounds very much like Gordon..

You would have to ask them if they are live or recorded. Props to them if they are playing the music (live or recorded) themselves. Much better then playing bootleg live shows by the real deal. I will look for them. As an 80's music fan I would love to see a bonafide Police tribute band.

You must consider technical reasons too... playing live with a single instrument is someway easy, for a band it is a little more complex since you need a good acoustic (if not a recording studio) to offer a good quality, if the instruments aren't well balanced in the mix the result would be very very poor, so i don't blame at these ppl performing in playback *but* with their own music... playing a CD/mp3 is different indeed, but it does have its own sense whenever the perfomance is a "representation" (a show) and not am event centered on the music/artist. Pretending is different than playing... both has their meanings, while the second is much more apprecciated indeed. I'm just disappointed about some ppl calling emself "DJ's" while they runs a sequence of mp3, without even talk by the mic making it more enjoying.. at that point i'll use a streaming radio with the same (or better) result.

The logistics of streaming a live performance by a band into SL is not an easy task. Getting everything mixed properly so it sounds good and then outputting it into a single stream is likely more than what some bands are capable of, or could afford, as opposed to a performance by a single artist. MudSlinger is a rock band that has been performing at various venues in SL for about a year now. The lead guitar in the SL band is the lead guitar in the RL band. They do not do covers. The music that they play is all original compositions that were recorded in the studio, but that doesn't detract from the show that they put on. It is about as close to a RL rock concert that you can get within the constraints of SL.

to many of these "tribute" bands are in SL and a good amount of them are playing the actual bands CDS!!!!
it is very possible to stream a full band it requires a mixer and into the sound card thats all. run all direct (drums on a track recorded, or drum machine-or as a previous poster noted a studio set up)
there are also bands like VLB, that play together from around the world live.
the bands like mudslinger , Suburban dogs... fantastic that they play live recordings of the band, and as long as some one talks and or plays along, it is live ... just playing a recording... not live at all. just another radio -dj-
I think theres a place for the "tribute" and if its a band covering or doing their originals from a pre recorded show or CD great but say its such, and advertise it that way.

the harder thing would be getting everyone in the band on SL from one wifi connection. LOL Most bands are already set-up on their mixer for recording their rehersals... i wouldn't think it would take very much more set-up to get that mix into SL.
I go to a lot of live shows... sometimes it's one guy playing guitar and singing live with recorded band backing him up.
Who knows--maybe he didn't speak 'cause he's got stage fright. so many SL performers have never bee on stage before in RL.

From: Rioko Bamaisin For the record, VLB is the best live performance I have ever seen in SL.Carry on... My vote would go to Schesis for that, though they only rarely play. To my knowledge Virtual Live Band use Ninjam, and are actually spread across the world while performing, which earns them special Cool Points in SL I am not too fond of the "performing to pre-recorded backing" style, though of course it can be hard to differentiate yourself from the cadre of "a man and his guitar" musicians. (That said, I have a soft spot for Alazarin Mondrian's prog-shredding).

If the singer didn't speak at all, there's no way it was live, imo.

Hello, Tali! Thanks for the support. The fact remains that I have a limited number of limbs and can only play 1, or at most 2, parts live in realtime so my only options are to recruit some people to form a full live band or use sequenced backing tracks. As my RL address book is rather thin and lacking in the contacts department, I make do with the latter 'sequenced' option. Not ideal, but it works. One has to make the most of one's circumstances in life, both RL and SL.

I can think of several performers who sing over their own prerecorded backing tracks. As long as they are honest about what they're doing, I don't really see the harm in it. It's when someone tries to pass off prerecorded as live that I have an issue. It makes it that much harder for the SL musicians who are performing live to overcome the bias and suspicion that they're really not playing live.
I had a conversation with a well-known SL live musician who ended up on a machinima podcast (is there a proper word for those?) that demanded at the last minute he use canned music. I raked him over the coals pretty hard about it, and he probably felt more uncomfortable about having to do it than I realized at first.
Anyhow, there's good actually-live music every night on the grid. Teejay's lineup for the evening sounds like a good start. Or head over to the Lonely Yak Texas Roadhouse in BlaksleeWorld for 6 pm SLT open mic. There's nearly always a great lineup, and you don't have to have fear of commitment with each performer only doing a few songs...great way to hear some musicians you might not otherwise. Just don't give up on live music because you ran across on group who wasn't really live. You'll miss out on some really good stuff.

Jaycat Nico and Frog Marlowe (not in world to be sure that is how they spell their first names) play live. It is pretty decent stuff.
