In-World Spam - Abuse and Support haven't helped

I've been bothered by spam in-world. I've contacted abuse and support many times. Linden keeps closing my support ticket without stopping the spam. It must be some kind of hack because it's being sent to me without a user name -- I can't block it. I don't think support is reading the tickets because they suggested I move to another area when this is being sent directly to me no matter where I am. I have no idea what to do. Who else can I contact to stop this? How do I block messages that have no user name? How do I explain to support that the spam has no user name? Is there a technical term for it?

If you provide more detailed information here about the type of spam and how it happens then you will doubtless be able to resolve your problem; several others have complained of (apparently) similar problems and been able to rid themselves of it. You'll need to explain what's happening more coherently though.

Pep (I understand the first step is to get a sample of the inworld spam sent to your email address - set your preferences to redirect IMs while offline to email, then logoff while the spam is appearing so the details of the spam message are captured - so you can identify the sender.)

Are the spam messages arriving as IMs or in chat?
Is the text green ( indicating they come from an object)?
Are you logging IMs and chat?

Turn logging on, and post us a short sample of the spam.

If it is following you from sim to sim, it is probably coming from a script inside something you are wearing which is hiding its name.

Yes, turning logs on is definitely a good idea.

Does it say something like "The object 'Lame Club Spambot' sent you a message to come wear your best feathered hat to some feathered hat event that nobody cares about"? I believe muting objects by name helps with that.

If they are reading your ticket, they clearly don't spend much time in their own world. You can pick up object spam just by visiting the wrong store or club, and until you mute every object (and their owners for good measure) it doesn't stop.

You need to MUTE whoever or whatever is spamming you.

It is possible that you are wearing an object that is scripted to spam you - search your inventory for "WORN" to show everything that your avatar is wearing and detatch each object one by one, to see if that stops it. If you find the spamming object this way, you can delete it.

If that didn't help, then the next step is to check whether it is chat or IM spam. If it happens wherever you are, in any sim, as you say, then it is probably IM spam.

Have your IMs sent to your e-mail box - there is on option in Preferences to set for this. When you receive the e-mail with the spam, it will identify the originator. Using this you can then MUTE the person or object by name in world.

There are a couple of other threads on this subject in Residents Answers which you could read for further help.

These are objects sent to me one or more times a day. It is exactly as if someone sent me an inventory object in the blue window, however, the objects are sent from ";(unknown user)". I've tried muting the object creator (there are several different creators) and tried muting ";(unknown user";). My best guess is this is sent from a third party client and the user simply left their name off of the inventory transfer (perhaps unintentionally).

Thanks,
Aly

Oh so they are inventory offers? The (unknown user) thing is just a server-side lag thing, check your transaction history to see where they are coming from (accept one or two for this).

Make sure "Include L$0 transactions?" is checked.

Have you opened any of the objects? They should list a creator in edit when rezzed. Sounds like you subscribed to a group that is sending you freebies.

If I were getting an object under these conditions, I'd be cautious about rezzing it. First go to some place where you don't have scripting privileges but do have build permissions.

It's OK to rez it, but watch carefully. If you get a yellow drop down message saying "object so and so is requesting debit permission on your account", do NOT click OK.

Right click the object and Inspect it. Find the creator. Mute creator. Problem solved.

(And you can also submit an AR with more information. Creator name, what the object's name is, its UUID, etc.)

That's certainly the most important caution.

However, it's also possible for a scripted object to rez another, invisible scripted object. Such an object could stay dormant until the owner leaves the area, and then start doing objectionable things.
