I have down loaded the latest viewer and since then, when ever I log in I am told that my “Cache” is clearing and also any changes I make in Preferences are reset when I open again (which can be very annoying). Is this a new feature?

I am logging off as normal, not crashing. Also when I log on I get the message about hardware and setting defaults for my configeration

What is the version number? What operating system are you using? You might need to delete your settings.xml file.

If by "latest viewer" you mean the RC, do be aware that these are early test versions. If they do not retain preference settings, that is a bug which should be reported (in the Jira) and fixed.

On a general note:
While the release candidates are "latest and greatest", and I generally use them as such since they often work as well as the previous release version, with the addition of some (as-yet unstable) nice new features slowly being worked out, they *are* test versions meant for gathering feedback, and if you're using them, do the community a favor and report any issues you find.
Even if it is supposedly a new "feature", but you find it annoying, do report it. (A current example of this is the discussion on the restructure of the pie menu).

there is an option to disable the hardware scan at startup. if it is enabled sl will revert graphical preferences every time you log on.

Nina, where is this? I'm on a laptop so can't get inworld. I know it's in Edit/Preferences somewhere. Also, I believe there's an option in Edit/Preferences to clear cache every time, but I can't remember where it is.

It does sound like the behavior is a combination of "normal" preference settings, but it shouldn't start doing this spontaneously, even if you can revert it by (un)checking the right boxes.

I am using Version 1.22.11 and not the RC viewer.
I am running Windows XP with an ATI Radion X1300 Pro.

It has only started happening after downloading 1.22.11. which also causes the inventry window to start in the open state when I log in.

I had several of my preference settings revert when I upgraded to 1.22.11. I don't think that the caching behavior was one of them, but it could of been. I went through and checked all my settings as soon as I realized something had changed.

See this page for client parameters:

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Client_parameters

Add this to the Target properties for the Windows shortcut you use to launch SL, or to the "arguments.txt" file on Mac. Put one space between this and any previous parameters there.

--purge

This will force the client to clear cached downloads during startup.
