This probably isnt a new question but I'm so fed up. After a period of no problems all of a sudden I can't stay connected for more than a few minutes to SL. So...

1 Why on earth does it happen?
2 Is there anything I can do to stop it happening
3. Why does SL crashing now freeze my PC so the onely way out of it is to reboot it never used to so all I had to do was shut sl

I have checked my connection and everythingis running just fine quite fast infact so i don't think its that.

Any thoughts or any idea on what i can do to stay connected?

Thanks

I don't suppose you're editing prims for the few minutes before you crash, are you? I've found that editing prims causes crashes with the current viewer.

i would look into the other viewers..i use Nicholas EC-F or Kerstins..not sure if you can still get Kerstins or not but if so it's a good one for not crashing..
there is cool viewer also..since i stopped using the main viewers i've had tons less problems..

Could be any number of things.

Something bad in the SL network cache, try clearing it. Go to Edit > Preferences > Network > clear cache.

Could be your cable/DSL modem or router.

Could be a video issue. Updating your computer's video drivers might help.

Maybe a memory issue. SL uses quite a bit of memory. If your computer is low on memory, or disk space on the startup disc, SL can crash.

You might also try going back to the previous SL viewer.

I had a crashing issue a few weeks ago. Sometimes I'd log back in only to crash immediately upon connecting.

Turned out to be heat related. I blew some dust out from around my CPU cooler and everything was fine again.

I have been experiencing this for no explainable reason, all drivers updated, open case with a portable floor fan blowing....

I crash every stinking time I am on SL, (i dont log off anymore, SL logs me off) I also get Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library -- Runtime Error... C:\Programs/SecondLife.secondlife.exe

or this one I love... The display adapter failed ot respond... of course I also get that audio looop freeze your pc OMFG hard restart.....things...

Also recently, I have noticed my FPS have droped considerably when in or close to particals... My fps slows to a crawl.... Takes FOREVER to load textures and I am just generally misrable!

"sigh" My partner has dubbed me LilMz Crash a lot....

Also, all I do is edit prims in SL, and I do crash while doing it.

This might not be of particular help to anyone else, but I started crashing a lot about a week ago, and it turned out to be an upgrade (not just an update to the database, but an upgrade) to my antivirus program (AVG Premium). I had to turn off some functions from it when I run SL.

Other usual suspects for me are that damn iTunesHelper module that makes my computer slooow and creeps up everytime iTunes updates something, plus of course overheating.

I found it was the version in my Router causing the problem, replaced the firmwear and all is well.

Hi Thanks for all you replies sadly I have checked everything and found nothing wrong. What I wouldreally like is one of the lindens who understands why people crash to explain why and what you can do to stop it happening. Everything has been ok for a while and now its not so come on Lindens tell us why

I was crashing lots too with the latest RC, thought it might have been AVG 8.0 so switched to Avira Anti Virus, this seemed to fix it but found it wos finding all kinds of things on my computer saying they where virus's but they weren't - tested them in "Sandboxie". Switched back to AVG and now just got a message saying AVG being updated to 8.5. Hope that doesnt cause me to crash all the time again. I've got a new computer with 4gb DDR2 RAM and a 9800 Nvidia card and a real fast connection. Keeping fingers crossed it all keep working.
