Logged back to sl made no changes to my system or programs. Now the left side of the sl view screen is black for about an inch or 2.
Suggestions appreciated

Do you mean the SL window fills the screen but the left part of it is black, as opposed to the SL window not covering the left 2 inches of the screen?
Check to make sure you don't have a black HUD on on the left.
I'd try going to Preferences, Graphics, and changing the" Run SL in a Window" option, then change it back.
If that didn't work I'd uninstall SL and reinstall SL.
If that didnt' work I'd delete the settings file.
Something like that.

Found It !!

Yes, issue was with my Mysti HUD, used View to turn of all my HUDs and screen went back to full size. Then just traced the culprit down, deleted and restored HUDs , works fine now.
