Lost Inventory Problems - My House Has Gone Missing

[RESOLVED] I've been home from work for the past few days and have spent much of my time building a new house, I finished it this morning and was very happy with it. Why I didn't take a backup I don't know, usually I think about that but this time, I had not gotten around to it yet.

At about 4:30 this afternoon I was putting a poster on the wall, I moved the poster, unselected it and it slid back to the original location, I thought that was weird, moved it again and this time it stayed in place. While I was standing there, about 5 seconds later, my entire house disappeared, well the entire part that was linked into one coalesced object. A few pieces I had unlinked to copy earlier and all of my furnishings and landscaping stayed in place.

I called LL but they said that they did not have much chance of recovering inventory if it was rezzed in-world and since I am on mainland they will not roll back the sim.

Can anyone think of any way I might be able to get my house back or even explain how rezzed objects can just disappear like that? I have searched through all of my coalesced objects in inventory and am sure it was not returned to me plus autoreturn is not even active on this parcel. I am baffled.

Ouch.

(One tiny terminological quibble: A "coalesced object" is what you get when you select multiple unlinked objects and "Take" them as a group, which shows up as a little stack of blocks icon in Inventory. Pretty sure you're referring to the part of the house that was actually linked together, in a linkset. Not that this helps at all.)

I've seen this sort of thing happen with recently-rezzed objects. I mean, like objects rezzed within maybe an hour or less of disappearing. Having older stuff just disappear from a sim without some kind of restart taking place is not something I've personally seen before (except maybe during the initial H4 transition). But they did warn us (http://status.secondlifegrid.net/2008/05/16/post75/) that practically everything was b0rked for a while, so I guess those conditions may have been the perfect storm to trigger it.

One possibility is that the linked object may have *moved* somewhere. Various ways this can happen, the simplest being somehow accidentally selecting it in the editor and dragging it a few hundred meters away without noticing it happening. But I've also seen unlinking operations go horribly wrong. And on one occasion, I've had a linkset spontaneously disintegrate and spread its prims across a huge swath of the sim. Anyway, the point is that it may be worth a flying tour of the neighborhood to see if the missing object is actually just misplaced. If you've been tracking parcel primcount, that may be a hint whether the thing is still on the parcel somewhere. I'd also peek at 0,0,0 of the sim.

When all that fails... I dunno. Try to think of it as being given the opportunity to repeat the fun you had building it the first time? :o

Yes, you are right about this, I don't know what I was thinking, I will go through my inventory again but I did look at all recent objects and did not see anything that looks like it.

I've been building for over a year and usually remember to take backups along the way, not doing that was my biggest mistake.

I don't think the object was moved, it was not even selected when it poofed. The prims have definitely disappeared off the land in the about land window. If it did move it must have left my land somehow.

Thanks for your response.

Well, after some more digging in inventory I did come across it, Either I had missed it somehow before or it just appeared in inventory after a while, I suspect the latter because it was quite easy to find and I'm positive I looked for an "object" in that location earlier. I still have no idea what happened but am glad to have it back. Thanks for your help. Now I feel a little silly for even posting here.
