Can Prims Just Vanish?

Alright, so I'm finally getting around to playing with building (only been in world for nearly a year). I build one item to completion. Go me. Start the second, rez a cube, play with the size and while in edit mode, it just vanished.

It's not invisible, it didn't shoot off somewhere... it literally just vanished. I've selected a huge area around me... nothing.

So the problems are: am I now wasting a prim on my lands? Will it reappear? Where did it go?

*scratches head and fuzzy ears*

Thanks in advance for any explanations.

Yes it happens. One more reason I stopped building. When you create a prime it is supposed to be added to the asset server. If for some reason that fails it will disappear.

Best to save your work after every edit if it is something important. Make a copy after every edit if really important.

Seen this happen from time to time. Sometimes it goes to 0,0,0, sometimes i'ts under the ground. You can check you land prim count to see if it's taking up prim count. Sometimes when the sim restarts missing things will reappear.
When things got real bad for me I don't a return all objects and started over.

Had the happen seceral times, once or twice the stuff cam e back later..ususally never does though

I always blame it on the Gremlin Linden, He`s the same one that pick-pockets my Inven , sometimes times he gets bored with my stuff and gives it back...mostly he squirrells it away in some deep dark cave under a sim somehere with all his other stolen goods

OK, glad it's not just me then. Not saving to the asset server makes a lot of sense. And yes, I do make copies along the way when reaching important junctures. That was just so weird though.

Gremlin Linden... heh. He needs to be fired. tee hee

Oh, it's definitely not just you. Happens to me too. Second Life is like a rpg fps... the first words out of the box are, "Save and save often!"

YES... My mantra for years has been "save now, save often". I think you only need to lose something important once to adopt that philosophy. Mine was when PCs first hit market in the 80s and I wrote an entire novel, saved it to a disk... never made a back up. What's a back up? LOL OH yeah, lesson learned.

I've been building stuff in SL for along time and never had anything I was working on just disappear while I was working on it unless I did one of the following things accidently.

Take it
delete it
Change a coordinate so it jumped way off in the distance.
Drag one of the directional arrows way off into the distance.
Accidently drag it underground.
Forgot to wear the group title on land where auto return was set.

Note when you click drag around an area looking for an item, make sure the tools settings for selecting items aren't preventing you from selecting it.

ArchTx has been lucky :)

I have had prims that I was editing vanish. Usually they return within about 5 minutes - or at least on a relog. I've never lost one altogether (well, not one that I didn't send someplace weird by accident, never to be seen again....)

This wasn't something I was building but I had a strange incident occur to me last night. A friend had a gift delivered to me via SLX. It was copiable and I rezzed a copy on my porch. A few seconds later both the rezzed copy and the copy in my inventory have vanished. Nowhere to be seen.

Never had it happen while I'm building but I save very frequently to be safe.

Yeah! Had it happen to me yesterday.

Adding a balcony to a skybox. I stepped onto the balcony to check the height of the railing and fell thru like it was phantom. I flew back up to the balcony and the only part that was still there was the railing.

Fortunately, I do save often so I was able to re-rez the balcony and continue to work.

One more thing, auto-return. Creating on group-owned land without wearing the right group tag is the only time I've ever had prims vanish. Pretty crazy hearing that it just happens to you guys.

something else that can cause this that's not been covered, typing in a wrong Z co-ordinate by error, if you mean to type 23m and instead type 223m it will look like it's disappeared as it goes out of range and doesn't shhow up as selected in the edit window, so I'd suggest going to the spot it dissapeared from put your flight assist on and slowly fly upwards to atleast 600m, you may find it.

Edit: opps sorry ArchTx Edo mentioned it.
