Texturing problem in Virtual Builder Studio

[Originally posted this in the builders' forum but no replies, so hoping someone here might have an answer]

I have recently bought Iron Perth's Virtual Builder's Studio (VBS) and although I think it could do with a lot more info/help (the YouTube tutorials don't really teach more than basics) I have managed to figure things out and find it a neat tool.

I have though run into a problem and am unsure whether it's something that I've done or a program bug (Iron Perth hasn't answered any IMs I've sent to him before anyone refers me to him).

As users of VBS will know you can texture all internal and external walls at once and have the textures perfectly aligned and sized. The drawback is that you can't individually texture rooms or different parts of the external wall until you finalise the floor plan and it removes all scripts from the walls, otherwise it textures all internal or external walls in addition to the one you want textured.

So after finalising the floor plan and the program getting rid of all the scripts in the walls I set about resizing walls to be contiguous with internal rooms ready for individual texturing. I then ran into this problem when texturing, which I hoping somebody may have some help or advice for.

When I go to texture a wall if the whole prim is selected I have all perms to do what I want. But as soon as I select 'select texture' I lose all perms it says, it's created by nobody and is public owned and that I can only modify it when selecting the whole prim.

If I'm trying to texture an internal wall that has an external face as well then I'm screwed. So is this a flaw in the program or did I do something wrong along the way. I'm hoping the latter otherwise VBS will have to go in the bin if I can't texture different faces independently.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions/info :)

Hi Sy :)

I don't have any experience with VBS, but as you are having trouble getting answers, perhaps my random thoughts can help.

First, have you tried texturing the faces without the 'select textures' option selected? In most cases, while the edit window is open (and maybe when it's not?) you can drag a texture directly from inventory onto a prim face. If you haven't tried that already, it's worth a shot.

Next, and this is a little more complicated, are all the prims linked? If so, unlink them and then check the owner and permissions on the prim you are trying to retexture. I don't know about VBS, but I have heard of other prim-replicating builder's aids that copy a prim from their contents... a prim that is created by the program's creator, not you. You might not notice this right away if a prim you created is used as the root prim. If it turns out the other prims are created by the VBS creator or otherwise have weird permissions, AND you can copy your VBS so you have a copy to experiment with, you might see if it has a working prim in its contents that you can replace with one of your own. If so, that might fix the permissions problem.

Perhaps a question posted through this forum's PM feature or the SLX forum's PM feature as a way to contact Iron Perth.

I've never used this product so no idea how it works, but instead of selecting texture through the edit menu, have you tried to just drag the texture from inventory and dropping it on the face you want it on?

Thanks Ava & Abba.

Strangely after 2 days of having this problem it has now disappeared! Everything is working as it should. I'm completely lost as to what happened and am putting it down to SL being cranky. Thanks to both of you for your helpful suggestions though.

Darn! We forgot the most obvious answer!

Glad to hear all is working properly again. :)
