We don't get enough noobs asking dumb questions here, so here's one from me:D

How do take snap shots and save them straight to my inventory? I keep saving them to HD them uploading them back again which can't be right.

I think it's "Take Snapshot" It will give you a dialog to Upload it to your inventory, for $10L.

Yeah I just come off SL having done that myself for my profile. You can easily down load a pic in sl and then it is in pic list. You can "rename" the pic and keep a crapbook. Good luck!

But still first saving them on HD is what many prefer, because every screenshot you store right way in your inventory costs 10 L$.
By saving them first to you hard disk, you can decide later which are 10 L$ worth to upload them.

after clicking the snapshot button a dialog pops up. select 'upload a snapshot' if you want to save pics to your snapshot directory rather than your local harddrive. once youve selected 'upload' it will remember the setting until you change it again.

Detailed description:

1) Click File Menu (Top left of Screen)

3) This menu gives you the options and at the Top Says "What would you like to do?"
4) Option: Click either Send Postcard, this is when you want to send your friend a picture of a place or something you have visited, Upload a snapshot, this will allow you to save direct to inventory and last Save snapshot to hard drive, hard drive is something on your computer that stores information this is separate from Second Life.

6) Upload (L$10) every snapshot you upload to either Inventory or Hard Drive will cost you 10 lindens, Click Discard and the picture will be deleted.

Then play around at your will with the other options.

Here is the opposite question:
Is there a way to "download" the pics that were saved in SL (uploaded directly without ever going through your computer)?

I) You can save as a .tga file (save as a texture).
-----A) How do you use a .tga file?
----------1) On my computer the thing showed up as that icon that means "it is there, but you can't open it" Took much work, and then help in SL, but found that I can open it in Photoshop but nothing else that I have on my computer.
-----B) Anything other than Photoshop work with .tga?
----------1) I know Paint, Paint Pro, Microsoft Photo Manager (or whatever that is called), etc. will not open a .tga file.

2) Ok, save as a .tga file . .. is there a way to save it as a .bmp file like the direct to hard-drive option? .bmp file (or .jpg) is a lot easier to use on my computer.
-----A) ? Have no idea how to save a photo already in SL to your hard-drive in any file other than .tga except by putting the texture (photo) on a giant box and taking a new picture of that box and telling the pop-up to save directly to hard-drive.

Long process getting your photos in SL into your computer, by either route (big box, take another picture), save as .tga ("Save Texture As" is the wording in the pull-down, I believe) then convert to .jpg. Is there a simple method that I overlooked?

If you think your question's dumb (which is wasn't) you should check out Edy's new thread. It's a beaut!

Okay, to answer the first one, click on the texture you wish to save to the hard drive and then go to file. If the Save Texture as is lit up then you can save it to the hard drive. I don't know if there is a way to save it as anything else, but a Targa.. but for simply viewing or converting the files, I use Faststone Image Viewer, myself.

Thank-you. I'll have to look for that Faststone Image Viewer then :)

I normally like using basic Paint, or the like instead of Photoshop, to make changes as Photoshop and Paint Pro take ages to load.

SL can also use .bmp files, just so you know. I've uploaded many .bmp files to my inventory.

Another program that can work with .tga files is The Gimp. It is open-source shareware that you can get from the internet. (Free!)

Once you have all the .TGA files in a folder on your computer, use the Batch Processing mode in photoshop to convert them all to any other format you wish. Don't have photoshop? (Photoshop elements will do just fine). If you search the net there are several freebie graphic format converter programs out there.
Personally I snapshot to disk then convert all the pics to .JPG format to save space. The original .BMP files I archive off to CD.

I thought I might do something with Photoshop, which is why I got it, but it looks too complicated to me. But you say that you can mass convert files all at once? Very interesting.

It's not all that bad once you get used to it. High learning curve, but then once you figure out the basics, it's tons of fun. I use The Gimp which is very similar. If you do start playing around with making pics and textures, there's an awesome forum here in the Resident Forum about Textures. The stickies (up at the top of the forum) are full of GREAT information.

For saving snaps you have to select the $L10 option of "Upload pic to inventory".

OK, I'll jump in with an answer and another stupid question :)

answer first_
If you like paint and need to work with TGA files take a look at Paint.net, open, free and targeted at us paint users, much easyer than The Gimp and Photo Shop etc.

now the question_

WTF is j2p format, I cant find anything to open it, all searches on google refer me to an engeneering interface, and I cant find it when searching SL, but all my snapshots are now downlading as j2p rather than bmp.
