http://www.massively.com/2009/09/23/second-life-content-creator-reports-infringement-gets-suspended/With the lawsuit pending against Linden Lab, you'd think now would be a pretty poor time for them to mess up on handling IP rights infringement. You'd think that, wouldn't you? ....... And they say the SL is great for busniess???? I wonder if this is the start of the Labs revenge on its customers...

It's bad PR, but without knowing all the facts, it's possible that everything LL is alleged to have done in this case was justified. It's also possible that the person in question is being framed, and that it's unreasonable to expect LL to figure that out before taking action.

There was a followup to this on other blogs, including posting of the apology letter to the resident from LL, admitting fault for the poor handling of his situation.

Its the fact it happened at all is the bad PR. There is NO excuse for that... the person that did it needs to be fired... and I bet it wont happen. I dont see any thing really changing the personal email... means about ziltch lol

From: Tristin Mikazuki There is NO excuse for that... Sure there is. LL has a monopoly in this space. They're free to do just about anything they want with few consequences.

Clearly, if it was gross negligence or done with malicious intent, then yeah, firing would be warranted. However, if it was due to a mistake, the Linden(s) involved should definitely be reprimanded, perhaps with some remedial training on how to avoid such mistakes in the future. Of course, we're talking about LL here; gross incompetence seems to be more of the norm than the exception. Even still, better an apology with everything restored than complete silence and stonewalling (which has also been known to occur).

Update: Olmstead's account was reinstated, this-afternoon. Well, sort of:
"The thing is, although they've technically re-instated my account, I am no longer allowed to buy, sell, or trade $L, and they've eaten the $65USD worth of $L balance I had before this issue began. In other words, I am effectively (if not explicitly) prohibited from being a Second Life merchant."

To be fair LL did apologise and everyone makes mistakes. There was another issue with this guy's account that Tateru covered and he has had it rough but hopefully everything is now resolved.
LL can't be blamed for vindictive behaviour by other residents, they have a duty to investigate and hopefully this incident will help to improve their customer service.

And in this case it DID occur lol Either revenge or incompetence both are just as bad in this case... both in any other busniess out there in the real world... that person would be fired and should happen in this case also. If the Lab wants to show its going to do the right thing by its customer.. it needs to do the right thing... and that is going to be the last thing they do lol

If they wiped out $65 worth of credit and banned him from Lindex that's a pretty major issue. Has that also been reversed?

Robby has added a comment to the latest post in his 'Daikon Forge' blog saying they've given him back his L$ at last, but it's not clear if the trading rights have been restored on his account as yet.

A situation that receives bad media attention gets the quick response. Get a good media source to print your story, and you might get a resolution.
