Was this ever released.... or even in 'testing'?... for some reason i have the hardest time navigateing around SL's official website for some reason trying to track this down lol... Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

I think it was one of those projects which LL started but lost interest in.

It wasn't a particularly good implementation of an IM client due to its reliance on the third party, firewall unfriendly vivox service and the need for a special SL client and an additional signup on the vivox service.

Try googling for SL TRIM or Metabolt for alternative SL IM clients which work with the existing SL system and in the case of TRIM at least, have a much low bandwidth requirement.

SLim is still available on the website, just go to downloads and then the First Look Client
That's the only client that uses SLim at this point.

I have the SLim ap and run it from time to time just to check, but since not one of my friends is running the First Look client I can't communicate with anyone.

Personally this is a feature I desperately want, to be able to chat with my friends in-world without having to load up SL would be very nice. Who really needs voice on this tho?

Anyway, SLim is still available and out there. I hope one day they move it to the main client.

Nope -- the First Look Viewer is not available at this time, it has been pulled from the download page (but that WAS where it was available at).

It hasn't been pulled, it was moved from the first look to a separate beta track.

SL IM should be taken out and shot, and buried for three weeks in a toxic landfill, dug up, shot again, set on fire, dropped in pig manure, thrown into an active volcano, and have its very name struck from the book of life and cast into the outer darkness.

OK, SL IM has every single disadvantage that Linden Labs used as reasons NOT to implement an IM-XMPP gateway, plus a whole lot more. It's not usable through a firewall. It's not an open protocol. It doesn't interoperate with any third-party IM systems. AND IT'S NOT EVEN A GATEWAY. There is no conceivable reason for it, other than as some kind of cynical diversionary tactic to avoid implementing something that was actually useful.

SLim seemed to aim at making things as complicated as possible. The name was amazingly ironic, since you need LESS to login to SL with the ordinary viewer than you need to use SLim.

SLim, opposite to what its name suggests, requires MORE.

You need:

- the SLim client
- a special version of the SL viewer
- an account with a voice provider (even if you don't use voice)
- friends who also use SLim (so you have someone to talk to)

It deserves nothing but scorn, since it solves no problem and satisfies no need. It only creates confusion since it gives the (false) impression that it does something useful.

Plus, everything that Argent said above.
