For the past 2 day everytime I try to login to Second Life, a message pops up saying "Unable to connect to Second Life. Despite our best efforts, something unexpected has gone wrong." I don't know why this is happening, I'm not good with computers.

Sounds like something is blocking your connection to SL. Firewall perhaps.

Was anything new installed about the time you started having issues?

You might try turning your system off, computer, modem, router, everything in the path, completely off for a few minutes.

Describing your system - what type of processor, what type of internet service, wired or wireless, operating system, amount of ram, video card, video ram, video drivers, etc., might help someone figure out the solution.

I have a 2.2 GHz quad-core Phenom 9550 processor. I get my internet from Verizon, and it is wireless. I have been attempting to install Flight Simulator X over the past few days, but each time it fails. That is a whole different story though.

That may not be a different story. I could be different symptoms to the same issue. You might try uninstalling both SL and Flght Simulator, then doing a search of all files for any remnant left over by the uninstall and manually deleting the files found (if any). Then get some program that will check your registry for problems or dll's that are orphaned and fix them. CCleaner is an easy to use and pretty good program for that......but not the best out there I'm sure. Then you might check to make sure your driver is not damaged in some way.......the best way to do that is to first find out which driver you have installed right now and writing that version number down. Then go to your graphics card manufacturers website and download that version to your hard drive. Then uninstall your existing video driver and install your freshly downloaded one.

If your problem persists you may have to download and install different drivers to get one that works with SL.......uninstall each driver your replacing first though. Do not attempt to install Flight Simulator until you get SL working again. Then, if you install Flight Simulator and your problem returns you know the culprit. If Flight Simulator works too then you fixed your problem.

Also, wireless is not the best way to connect to SL.

You might try taking your computer to someone else's house and seeing if SL will work there. If it does work somewhere is, that gives you a pretty good idea that the problem is with the connection, not the computer.

Is it running Vista or Windows XP?

Have you tried Suezanne's suggestion to power cycle the whole network? I'm guessing that you have a Verizon FiOS connection, and their wired/WiFi router (ActionTec, if memory serves), which has a propensity to strand connections every month or so for no apparent reason. But it's generally a good setup, and I used to run bridged WiFi across my house to that gateway with very few problems.

On the other hand, if you're actually connecting through Verizon Wireless's EVDO network, well... yeah, expect problems. (But who could afford to, anyway?)
