I downloaded the Second Life software today, but haven't been able to get it to open even once before it freezes and crashes, and I don't know where to go for help. Can someone direct me to support -- or maybe help me out?

You're on Windows XP? Vista? Mac? Linux?

It'd help a lot if you told us a little about your system.. At least if it meets the requirements at http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php .

You can start here...the system requirements..see if you meet the minimums. There are also links to various support resources as well

Thanks very much for your help.

Windows XP. Five hundred and fifty-some MB of RAM (don't know how many are dedicated and don't know how to find out). 2.2 GHz Celeron. 11 MBS connection -- and I don't know how to check the other info for the system requirements. If that isn't enough, please tell me how to find the rest of the information on my PC.

Oh, and none of the URLs I see in the forums are in link form. They all show the code instead. How can I change that so they are links? I'm finding it tedious to sort the code from the links and then try to paste the right portion into my address window.

You can't do anything. The code has been turned off pending a software upgrade, that has been a bout a year overdue. There is a fix if you usee Firefox as your browser, see the Greasemonkey thread at the top of the forum.

Right off the bat, you could use more RAM. At least 1 GB.

Hi Kaitie, and welcome!

I'm sure you've already seen this page:

http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php

about what Linden Lab recommends you should have in order to run SL.

And regarding your own system's particulars, I know there's a faster way to do this, but I cannot recall how.

So here's what you can do: Go to the "Help & Support" on the Start button of your PC. Type in the word "system", and go to "get information about my computer", and then click on "find information about hardware installed on this computer."

That will give you information about what's installed on your PC.

That is a really nifty programme, though it does say I am unable to run SL. Seems I am luckier than I thought

Wow. Thanks for the welcome and all the help everyone. It looks like my video card is missing a needed component, and I only barely meet the minimum system requirements for RAM.

So, since I can't run the software until I upgrade my computer, which might be a while, how long will my identity survive before SL automatically deletes me from the system?

Hi and welcome to the forum (and hopefully SL itself soon).

Can you get the login screen at all? if you can, go to Edit at the top of the screen, and choose preferences. Then go into the Graphics Tab. set everything VERY low. its just possible you might get inworld on the minimum graphics settings... but if you do, don't worry if your avatar moves slowly and everything looks blurry... on higher settings, everything looks much better, and when you upgrade your PC you will enjoy everything much more.

Good luck

Thanks Imogen, but I can't get anything to open at all. I can see the outline of a screen as it starts, but then it crashes before I can even see what it is.

I will check in here often and, who knows, maybe I can learn enough from all of you that I'll actually know my way around pretty well when I finally get in!

Thanks everyone!

Not everybody can use the latest official version viewer because it uses very high end graphics features.

Try one of the older 1.19 viewers or alternative unofficial viewers

I thought it would fail me because my video card isn't technically supported, but I guess it still squeaks by. :D

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.
