Saving chat logs

When you click in Preferences > Communication to "Log Chat," where do the chat logs get stored? Is a separate one saved for each person you chat with? Is a separate one saved each day or session? Or do they just keep being appended to?

You can choose the location. It should be on the same tab.

I let mine go to the default location, which is C:\Documents and Settings\"user name"\Application Data\SecondLife\"avatar name"

There is only one "chat log" and it keeps getting added to. There are seperate IM logs for each person you talk to, they also just keep getting added to until you delete or rename them.

You can periodicaly remane a chat log with the currrent date if you wanted to keep track of them that way. When you rename it, the system will start over with a new "chat" log the next time you log on.

It tells you in the very window you mentioned (communication) where they are stored. You can even change the location there. Go to the directory it says and select your avatar folder and there will be files with avatar names. Those are the log files. Open them with notepad or whatever works.

They keep getting appended to.

Quick Q about that... if I delete my current chat logs, would SL take less time to load/run, since the (new) file it's accessing is much smaller?

Carefully what you say in some of your chats and IMs. You never know when someone will use it against you. I am not sure if anyone has used what I have said to them against me, but I have been shown message logs from other conversations I had nothing to do with and honestly I wonder what have I done to find myself back in high school with all of the gossip. I came to SL to escape some of this crap.
