eg. someone has a plot of mainland mature 1024, gets approved, claims their zindra land and then their mainland gets purchased?

You have a period of time--I believe it's two weeks, where you can hold on to both parcels without an increase in your tier. Even if you told the Lindens you wanted to give it up, you can hang on to it and even sell it during that time. After the grace period is up, you either have to let the lindens reclaim it, or, pay any increased tier.
Probably be a good idea to reopen your Zindra migration ticket and mention that you've decided to keep the land and sold it.

ah I thought it was a straight swop. So I can keep it, I just have to pay the increased tier. Cool.
