is there a way to hide your name floating above you so others dont see it?

no. but you can go into preferences and hide all of theirs from your screen, or just yours from yourself.
unless you are wearing a prim with invisible texture, and it's large enough to cover you and your name... it'd have to be pretty big tho.

I thought at one time it was against either tos or community standards to hide your name. hmm will have to read those again.
