How do I get gestures to work?

I'm a rank newbie and I can't make gestures work. I follow the instructions in Richard Mansfield's book and noithing happens. On the drop down menu for the gesture button at the bottom of my screen I only have one entry: /repulsed and nothing happens when I click that. I know I'm missing something, but what is it? I'll be humungous grateful for any help I can get. And thanks, in advance.

Click on the Inventory button bottom at the bottom right of the screen.

Open the Library Folder.

Open the Gestures folder.

I think there's a general folder, drag that to your avatar.

Drag the male and or female folders to your avatar as suits you.

I think the gestures are supposed to come preactivated these days.

The general way to activate a single gesture in your inventory is to either drag the specific gesture to your avatar or right click it and select activate.
