Is it possible to IM someone without being in the game? I've heard of it being done, but I can't figure it out. I've tried a couple of searches on the forums, but found nothing so my apologies if this is commonly asked.

www.zonkster.com allows you to send IMs into SL from a website. But you have to go in and register to get a password before you use it the first time. And you don't get replies, it's fine for sending messages in, but not for a conversation.

Hi Mag,

If they've sent you an IM that went to your email, you can respond to the email and it should get to them in-world.

Well I tried the respond to email a few times and nothing happened, so I purchased the IM module of hippo. Since I had the Hippovend already, I can use the hippo website for both purposes :-)

My partner is 5 hours behind me, so I often IM him while I'm inworld and it goes through to his email - he responds to that mail and I get it inworld! It definitly works! :)

http://www.zonkster.com/index.htm

and it'll now recognise most mobile browsers and load an optimised page onto your cell phone.

(alternatively, you can key in http://mobile.zonkster.com for the mobile version.)

however, that email address is only good for a few days (I think 5) after the message has been sent. Then it gets bounced back.

Actually it is my understanding that email address is only good for that log in session and no good after the in-world party logs out.

I'm sure when my partner IM's me and I am not online, it goes to email and stays there. I don't think it bounces back when the sender goes offline?! ( I may stand corrected on this)

yes, you're correct. It doesn't bounce back.

And if you are both offline and you respond to an IM that he recently sent to you (while he was inSL), your email reply will go back into SL and out to his email and appear as if you were in SL at that time. I know, because my partner and I have been fooled by this in th epast.

There is a time limit on how long the address for teh IM is active thouhg. It used to be a couple of weeks...then it was a week. It always seems to vary an dI've never been able to pin down the exact time it lasts.

But always ...ALWAYS...when replying to an IM from your email account...delete the message that you are replying to so just your message is showing. Not only does it make for a messy IM to teh person that is in SL ( a bunch of garbage text on their screen) there was also a bug that let the persons real email address get through to teh other person in SL.
(not a big deal for a friend but if you want to keep anonymity with someone else, then you should follow that rule)
