How do you create an official alt?

I want to create a real bonafide alt, how do you go about this? If I go to the normal registration page it looks like I'm just creating a brand new account.

I think that is the only way to do it now. There is no longer any link between accounts.

Anyone else heard different?

Create the account, and when you give the same information that your regular avatar is associated with, you will be informed that it costs $10 usd to register more than one account. At that point, you pay the $10, and your alt is now a registered basic member (that's "official";).

They did away with that, it's now free and just like creating a new account =)

Well yeah, no smart person is going to pay 10 bucks for a shiny new alt when they can get the same for free.

I was told by a Linden that it's free at the moment...no guarantees it will stay that way. Do use valid information though.

Except they used to suspend or ban ALL your accounts if they caught you with an unverified alt.

I paid $10 back in February when I made my first alt. Since then they have all been free, just need a valid email address.

A couple of months back, Jeska was asked about the dropping of the $10 fee for additional accounts, and she said yes that's right, but the five account limit remains. Register any more than that, and you'll probably lose them - as lots of people did earlier this year.

I know alts can be abused, but is there something generally wrong, or against TOS of having one? The only way I know of to ensure that you don't lose a group that has land deeded to it is to have an alt as its second member. So why is an alt something you can be "caught" with?

Alts are useful, LL probably likes us to have them due to apparent population number inflation, and I actually have two of my own. I was talking about people who signed up alts using false information and/or didn't pay for them when they used to have that requirement...hence my use of the word 'unverified.'

I can hook you up with a free one. Send me 500L before you create it and you'll be auto-enabled to make a new one for free. It will just skip over the pay $10.00 requirement.

No thanks necessary. Just a little service I provide.

there is no '5 alt limit'

From the Base Of Knowledge

How many alts may I have?
Currently, you can create as many additional Basic or Premium accounts as you want to pay for, with the following limitations:

You can create up to five accounts per email address.
You can create no more than two accounts in a single 24-hour period.

Previously, we limited accounts to five per household and two per payment method, but this is no longer the case.

I have it on good authority that they suck at catching people though.

Not that I have illegal alts or anything you understand.....

I stand corrected.. I created a registered second account back in January and was going by that, but Ciaran, the $9.99 fee is the PREMIUM account fee, which is also a monthly fee, or $7.50 if you pay 3 months ahead, or $6 a month if you pay yearly like I did. (Unless that's changed!).

A good thing to do is buy some Lindens using your alt account. You have to give the CC info then and that allows them to have the "Payment info used" show up in their profile. And you don't have to feel so guilty about a second free account.

About $10.00 USD worth gives you a nice head start toward not looking so newbie-ish too.

Best way:

Register a new account, filling in the personal information honestly and accurately. Decline to go Premium.

Go to the LL Website and add credit card info to your account. It has to be a credit card now, as PayPal is borked for this purpose and LL hasn't got a clue how to fix what they broke.

Use the credit card to purchase $1 USD worth of Lindens. Use the same card that your main used, if you can.

Your alt now has your accurate information associated with it, the credit card is one in your name, and you are "Payment Info Used".

And it only cost you a buck.

They aren't...the site still says the same old thing, which is why I contacted customer service to ask when I created my last alt in June.

It's more than a head start - if you work at it, you can do a really nice job for $10.00 and still have quite a bit left over for some toys.

What would really be nice would be to be able to link the alts to your main account and transfer things back and forth that can't be transferred. For example, I'd like to have an alt and give it my no-transfer stuff. There's no way to do that. But if LL would let us link accounts and make that transfer, it would be a great feature. I still wouldn't be able to sell the stuff or give it away in freebie boxes or whatever, but I'd be able to choose which of my own alts had it in inventory.

May be a silly question, but...once you've accomplished this, can you then sell your land to this alt -- does this make the alt Premium?

In order to personally (under that account name) own mainland, that account must be Premium. Premium means paying a monthly/quarterly/annual subscription for SL.

I think if your non-premium alt tried to buy the land, it would get a message about that.

No. Being "Payment Info Used" is not at all the same as being Premium.

Being Premium means you're paying a monthly subscription to Linden Lab for the ability to buy mainland parcels direct from LL, and for free maintenance on the first 512 M2 of land that you pay for on the Mainland. It also means you get access to a help desk support system. And Premium accounts get part of what they pay to LL returned to them each month as a weekly "stipend" of L$, though what you get back is less than if you had just gone to Lindex and spent your subscription money directly buying L$. Each account that you want to be Premium must seperately pay the monthly dues for Premium membership. If you have 5 accounts, and one is premium, the rest are still not Premium unless they also start paying a monthly fee to be Premium.

None of my accounts are Premium. Yet I own over 18,000 M2 of land on two private islands. Being Premium may have been a good deal way back when they gave you your first 512 M2 of land at just L$1 per M2, and when there were virtually no private sims that you could buy land on. Now, private sims offer everythin that Mainland does, and are usually better managed.
