Hello, Happy new year, :)

can someone help me?
I m the owner of an Homestead Island, i set the land NO FLY and NO EDIT TERRAIN for all the residents.
Instead i checked them and other residents can fly and edit terrain and i know thy have not the NO FLY sign on their SL screen.
Why all this?

TY, very much.

There is an admin option to enable always fly. Even if they are not using this, people who tp in flying stay in the air as long as they don't land. And they probably have the no fly icon on their screen, but seriously, I am guilty of not watching these dinky things.

The edit terrain is more serious though. No idea about that one except double check all your settings.

I am not sure how they are getting around the edit terrain restriction (unless you granted it to group), but 'no fly' is pretty pointless. There are so many ways to get around it that it is more a minor annoyance than anything else.

Some of the ways:

1) start flying on fly enabled land .... 'no fly' only means you can not start flying

2) use emerald and select 'fly always' in the preferences

3) at least one other way (which looks to be a bug so I will not go into details)

Check the group settings, there are options to always allow fly and terraform.

For #1, I think you mean "arrive flying".

Also, under the Advanced menu is a "View Admin Options" setting and if that is clicked, always having the Fly button available is one of the things it gives you.

ETA -- Are you sure anyone can terraform or are you just thinking so? In other words, if there is some extreme terraforming done on an adjacent sim, then it can impact the edges or your sim.

Nope, just start flying on another parcel that allows flight.

Which was the bug I was referring to. It is not sticky so you need to reenable it all the time though, which is why 'no fly' is more of an annoyance than a mandate. I *HATE* that 'you can not fly' sound that is there until I turn it off.

Being deaf, I"ve never heard it. :p What's it like? I do kind of pay attention to a land owner's preference though, if he doesn't want me to fly I'll not try to get around it. Never got the point of it though, unless there's a low skybox he doesn't want anyone to get up to? What would be some good points of not allowing to fly?

An annoying grating sound I hear at Virtual Ability when I try to fly in the area where new users are learning how to move. :)

Areas where you are most likely to run into flight being disabled are RP areas (the 2d ones that is). Also some new user areas, like the start of the VAI course.

Oddly enough I have encountered it in some stores too .... which have had things >10 m high on the walls!

Been asking that myself since the time I accidentally came flying into a mall that usually doesn't allow it and was instantly messaged "Get down or get banned!". Been asking the owners who are so strict about it, too, but the usual reply I get is "Shut up, this is my place, I can do anything I want!". Seriously, what's the point?

Oh, that, right. I didn't know it had a sound. As a mentor, I am sure you are aware why that exists, right. When classes of students or nurses or another educational group come to VA for a class project, they are there to first learn the basics of how it works. They are usually studying some form of 'Disability in Virtual Worlds'. This happens on a very regular basis, not just occasionally. One of the hardest things to do is to keep them from flying away. So on the course there, yeah there is that area, to make them stay together and do what they came there for. Nuts though about the stores where things are too high to see. It was ages before I learned how to cam, when first coming to SL, but I guess that's what they expect you to do there. The RP thing makes sense, if flying would put you at some kind of advantage over others in the RP, I guess.

Ooops - I saw the "start flying" part but missed the "on fly enabled land" part.

Hmm - I never thought about the View Admin Options as a bug.

Yes, and it seems LL picked one that would REALLY annoy us hearies too!

Oh, no question that it makes sense to have it there. Just that often when I am there I am running between several points at VAI to help people so pre-emerald it was always annoying when I lept up and had that noise from my computer. :)

Wow, talk about some places that would hit my "never shop" list. I even told a store owner this once and she commented back that she did not care. I then responded with how much I had spent on clothes that week and how much in one store alone. She said she would consider changing it. I told her it was too late for me because of the rude way she had handled it all anyway - then I left and never returned.

Or if the ability to fly is totally out of character for the RP environment.

Either that or an easter egg. :)

Now that I have fly anywhere in emerald it is still handy to see media streams. Usually I prefer to load up the stream in iTunes and turn off the SL stream. That way I do not have to worry about having the stream cut out if I step on another parcel or have to TP away for a moment. Plus if it is a DJ I get the bonus of seeing the track names when something is playing that I like but do not know the name of.

Or places that want you to traverse the RP in a set order, like a story. I think it is legacy code though and the best way to handle it is to ask people not to fly via an initial notecard with the sim rules.

The primary reason for the no fly option is for RP sims. It's not particularly realistic to see 19th century Victorians flying around, hence, those sorts of sims disable flying for that reason. As far as other places are concerned (non RP), they're just idiots I guess who like to wield the power simply because they have it. Also, as others have stated, it's fairly easy to get around the issue in most cases.
