I logged out for 20 minutes, and then logged back in to a message saying my IMs were capped, and i had so many IMs that had come through with a time stamp from when i was online!
And i just logged out now for 4-5minutes and returned to MORE IMs that had come thru, time stamped yet again during an hour that i was in SL - but did not receive the message.
As far as bugs go this is pretty bad. Because when you log in a friend or few IM you and get no response, except you logging out hours later - what are they to think???
I'd file a support ticket but i suppose they wouldn't get to until the sometime in then 2010.

I'm not sure about this, but I know that a few weeks back I was getting IMs that came through as I was teleporting sent to my email as offline IMs. Usually they would then come through to me inworld either on my next login, or randomly during the same session, sometime later. Which led to some amusing conversations when I replied and the senders had no idea what I was talking about

Well it has never happened that badly but I regularly get offline im's when I'm online, I keep my email open for this glitch.

happened to me the other day while talking to a linden LOL
he was like... why did that last msg from you come to me in my email... my reply was...
I dunno... you tell me why it did that... then fix it...
hehe
yes it happens to me too, but not as badly as what you described
