...nah, why should you? You can do SL for free. "Monsters vs Aliens" opened recently, and you will be hard-pressed to find a single ad or review, or promotional materials of any kind, that don't trumpet the wonderful fact that FINALLY, a truly Immersive 3D Experience is Available!!! FINALLY!!! It's been the major selling point for the film. Now, if LL actually wanted to grow, all they'd have to do is make a 30-second promo in-world (free except for the time of the Lindens involved) that highlights all the Immersiveness of SL, and pay to have it shown in the trailers for "Monsters vs. Aliens". That last bit might cost...well, I have no idea. But the payoff in new customers---many of whom might transition to paid accounts---would probably dwarf the trailer-expenditure. But.....I don't think they want to grow that fast. (They've been handling concurrency of 80K pretty darn well. But if they had 500K clamoring to get on...well, that could be a problem.) Still, it's interesting to watch people who know nothing about SL get all excited about Immersive environments, eh?

As for a horde of new players coming along with some media tie in. . .it's been tried. There was a CSI promotion a while back that was tied to a couple episodes of the show, that mentioned SL by name and featured "in game" footage. Also, there was an "Upper West Side" collection of sims created for a Gossip Girl tie in around the same time. Nothing much came of either.

if we had more coming to sl than we already have coming..it would over tax us to the point that the grid would be going down like the old days... the problem isn't enough customers..we get 10 to 20,000 boosts in just logins on every single thing that makes the news..
watch the responses from the forum every time sl makes the news..see how many say..well get ready for the flood lol
And the CSI thing did bring a bunch of new people to SL..

I saw it yesterday, but only in 2D because our local cinema is so bloody hopeless. I was less than impressed. The 3D stuff might be amazing, but a story has to stand on its own merits. I was hoping for another "Incredibles" and it didn't deliver. And without the 3D FX, it was all a little... flat.
I'm really not sure what LL would gain by being advertised alongside this. Anyone expecting the same sort of experience from SL as from "Monsters" would be puzzled and possibly disappointed when they got in-world. And while a lot of adults go see PG films like this, SL is currently 18+. Other than "3D world", I just don't see the link.

From: Kelli May Other than "3D world", I just don't see the link. The link I'm seeing is the force and frequency with which those promoting the movie pointpoint 'immersive 3D' as its MOST compelling quality. And I'm thinking that for all the hordes who've heard nothing about SL except that it's a 'sleazy role-play game' (of course it isn't, but that's SL's image in the minds of most)-----and yet are intrigued by all the hooplah about the Immersiveness of the "Monsters vs Aliens" movie----well, finding out that they could get Immersiveness here, for free, would impress them. But as mentioned---LL probably doesn't want to grow that fast. (It's really more the irony of it all that I'm noting.)

Yes, I think you're right. I just sort of chafe at the 'sleazy role-play' image of SL. I wish people had better information about it---and if the grid could handle the hordes that would appear if a promo DID appear before the "Immersive 3D" movie...then people WOULD have better information. But it won't happen.

SL is immersive?
Then again, I do sometimes feel like I'm immersed in treacle when trying to move.

3D movies and theme park rides do nothing for me since I only have vision in one eye. SL is *much* more immersive than any of that stuff.

Hmn, how do we define 'immersive'?
Those promoting the 3D movie seem to be defining it as 'a screen you look at in which things seem to be 3D, as if you can move and thereby see the things from different angles--such that the things don't seem to be mere flat projections on a flat screen (even if they actually are)'.....or something like that. Surely SL would fit that definition...

From: Ponsonby Low Would YOU pay $10 for an Immersive 3D Experience!?!?? i thought that is what i am doing in SL when i pay my premium membership and land tier... basic accounts can't 'own' land, and therefore are not FULLY immersive residents.

From: Ovaltine Constantine Well...I joined because of the CSI thing. (Indirectly.) And I joined because of a brief feature on The Daily Show. The feature wasn't about SL, so much as it was about the Obama campaign....you know, as in 'he really appeals to the geeky people'. But the point is---the usual message 'SL is nothing but a sleazy role-play game' got derailed by the actual EXPOSURE to SL provided by the short Daily Show piece. And the same is true of the CSI and other shows that showed SL. People just don't realize all the possibilities involved in being here until they actually see SL, even if only for a minute or so on a TV show....
