Depending on where you're at, you could have a mega-prim covering the sim.. thus the gray.

The bad condition I'm used to has generally been called redmapped.
That's when the client is still running but you aren't properly connected to the servers, your map is red, you can't move.
What's graymapped?

I am guessing what is ment here is when the map takes forever or refuses to load. Each sim square stays grey.
Yep happens to me every so often usually when concurrency is high or my ISP is being pissy.

The sim map was loaded just fine then went to open it again and its gray on any sim even after a clear cashe and reboot

Yeah I'm exceeding familiar with that kind of gray map.
The big map is doing alright for me at the moment.
I'm reading about problems with ...
well I was reading about problems, but SL just crashed.
It was problems with things loading.

Well upon restarting my group list and group chat wasn't there at all, couldn't file abuse reports against the Nazi uniformed "Seig Heil" soundmaker at Waterhead, so I cleared cache and restarted again.
Now I'm totally graymapped.
And now while typing this post and finishing the preceding sentence I've crashed again. Hmm.
