1. Meeting people with the same SL surname (90 responses):
- 40 per cent had met no-one with the same surname, 24 per cent had only met one, 16 percent had met two and 20 per cent had met three or more
- many people had formed friendships on orientation with same surname avatars
- some people had very common surnames (one with over 70 000) but still had met hardly anyone with the same surname
2. Attempts to choose your SL avatar name (139 responses):
- 70 per cent got their name first time, 13 per cent had to make a lot of attempts
- many people posted, warmly sharing their personal experiences
- many thanks to Jig for his parallel thread on why people chose their name
3. $US to leave SL (118 responses):
- 48 per cent of responders either wanted a million dollars or would not leave for any amount (this 48 per cent was split evenly into 24 per cent chunks)
- 3 per cent were leaving anyway
- only one responder would have been tempted by the $71 plus WoW incentive (which was subtly valued at $1 dollar.....
)The first two surveys were linked. The (unstated) hypothesis being that people would not be able to choose their desired name with over ten million sign ups and that despite the huge number of sign ups and a relatively limited pool of surnames, that hardly anyone would know people with same surname, as the vast majority (maybe 99 per cent) of signups were inactive.
The hypothesis was wrong as most people easily got their name in first time, perhaps partly because people had imaginitive names and partly because people used very unique names carried over from former interweb identities, but (I guess) also because the Forum community is relatively "oldie" and people got their names in early as SL was still in its early stages.
The third survey was a revelation - nearly half of SL residents that responded would either not leave SL for any amount of money, or would require at least a million bucks to consider it. I love this result - it just goes to show how important SL, and the friendships formed with it, are to people's lives!
Did you enjoy these surveys? I put them up as an undemanding soft antedote to post Christmas revelry... but do you want to see more (LOL - I have posted another poll with this thread to get answers - last one this week - promise!)
.Finally - many thanks to all those that voted and contributed to the surveys, it's great fun to poll the electorate!

I'll miss this damn place.
