But if either the questioner or the answerer is in the EU, VAT is payable Inc

From: Nina Stepford this forum! this is a popular topic. if you look over the past few pages youll likely find a lot of discussion on this. Indeed there is, however I'm still confused. I am interested in building property. I can do a bit of building in the Help Island Public sandbox but some demi-god type process keeps returning my Object to my inventory after a short timeout. I need a place where I can just leave my stuff overnight for example then come back and carry on the next day. So I thought I'd buy 512 sq m of land to get started on... easier said than done. I went to the land store and clicked on some random square expecting to be able to purchase it but got a 'you cannot choose a space next to a space you do not own' message, classic catch22 situation. I cannot buy land until I have bought some land ... nice. The only other way it seems I can buy land is to purchase it from another resident or pay over $1000.00 US to get my own space. I don't want someone elses land that they have built over and I can't afford over $1000.00 US to get started, maybe when I understand more about building that will be an option, righ now I just want a place to experiment How does Second Life undergo organic growth if there are no small reasonably prices parcels of land for new residents to purchase. go inworld. Go to land search. Select "for sale mainland" from the drop down menu on the left. Click search. Sort by $L per meter. You will see a bunch of 512 plots for sale for under $L3500...about US$15. Buy one and start building to your heart's content.

I cannot buy land until I have bought some land ... nice. Sounds to me like you're on the page to buy whole islands. Go in-world, Search > Land, uncheck the price box and tick "Area >= sq m" and put in 512 (that cuts out all the little ad plots) and you'll see some nice plots of land come up there. Just remember the difference between OWN and RENT. If it isn't mainland, you don't own it even if the sales literature says you do. You might just consider renting, however, for a month or two until you're settled into SL, rather than wasting money on something you aren't sure about. The land market is likely to drop very soon after all this VAT rubbish, so you might just want to keep a close eye on stuff. Expect to be paying L$10 and $20 per square metre for a reasonable plot. Some of the bargains you will see are not actual purchases but renting instead. Be careful and don't rush. Broccoli

He wants a place to build stuff on, not a waterfront plot in the highest priced areas. You can get a plot like that for L$6.5 a meter....thousands for under L$10 a meter.

idaho i think maybe you should rent a piece of land until you are familiar with the whole land-buying thing. you will be able to build, things wont get autoreturned to you and so on. you can rent a suitable parcel for L$200-300 a week (that's about one us dollar a week). Yes, I've been reading about this nonsense. Here in the EU we are constantly being shafted by our governments, now it looks like their sticky little fingers are grasping at our virtual existences as well, still, they have to pay for their outlandish expense claims, 'official residences' and call girls somehow I guess. Good advice from all responders, many thanks. Idaho

That "Land Store" is totally misleading. It should be renamed to "Private Island Store" or something, and then state something like "If you want to buy individual parcels, please use the inworld Search tool." When I first started I looked at the Land Store and went "huh???" LL needs a DECENT WEB DESIGNER. Christ, is it SO difficult? Basic web design is NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. Sorry. /rant off [Edit: I'm not sorry at all. I'm angry and disappointed with LL these past few days. I AM sorry for going off-topic, so I'll leave you all to it. ]

... and this is different from the rest of the world how? Try taking this complaint to the citizens of Myanmar and Dafur for a bit of perspective. On a slightly less confrontational note; if you do decide to buy land as a newbie be prepared to (a) get it wrong (b) find somewhere later you much prefer and (c) sell at a loss and move on. I know I did.

Idaho...... patience is the best advice I can give. You need to completely understand land ownership in SL before diving into it. I would hate to see you return and say this or that happened and I lost this or that. When that happens all you can get is sympathy.

You've only been on about a month Idaho. RENT RENT RENT. I'm glad I rented first. It gave me time to figure it all out, know the areas and have a general understanding. If I had bought land right away I know it would have been a big fiasco.

I actually ended up buying some adjoining parcels and made a pretty garden n stuff. Was no fiasco, and had a great time there. I only sold because I realized that I never actually spent any time there. Now I regret selling it, hehe.

I found SL very disorienting at first because there are no real maps to help a new person understand the full layout of the world. I guess there were then but I didnt know where to find them. I had no concept or understanding of mainland vs estate, etc. I guess I could have gotten lucky with a purchase but that's all it would have been..pure luck.

Here are my tips:
Be sure to consider the amount of prims you have available and what you want to build.
Check out the neighbors! Of course what is there now might not be there tomorrow, but if there are other groups of parcels for sale, there is risk for 'bad' neighbors, ad farms and other annoyances later in time.
Check out how many avatars are in the sim at a time, a busy sim that is full of people may prevent you from accessing your parcel!
Open the View->Statistics Bar and pay attention to Time Dilation and Sim and Physics FPS values. The lower the numbers, the higher the lag in the sim. It may not be obvious unless you watch it for a few minutes.
