I have a new club halfay accross the region from my home. They like to hold dance contests, and wager on the best dancer. Probably against TOS, but anyways...
(side note: I don't know how anyone can rightfully win since they all seem to be using the same anim poseball, but that's another issue)
In any case, EVERY resident there, and all of the gambling (oops, I mean contest) objects SHOUT.
ALL THE TIME.
Now they're all within 20m of each other, and they probably don't need to shout... but is all this annoying noise polution AR-able? I've muted the gambling devices and the ringleaders, but it's annoying to be constantly interrupted by their antics while trying to build or relax in a grave. Every time I mute a resident, another 2-3 pop up and have to be muted.

From: Annabelle Babii (side note: I don't know how anyone can rightfully win since they all seem to be using the same anim poseball, but that's another issue) Sounds like another form of the Popper which contestants vote for who they want to win rather than having it be selected at random. I mean, how does anyone have a dance contest in SL unless it was for animation scripters? I'd try talking with the owners and if you have no luck there then AR them. May not help but can't hurt. Sounds like an indirect form of griefing if you ask me. I use to have a next door neighbor who use to have his bound and gagged boys always shout out too. Fortunately he wasnt home much so it wasnt that big of a deal.

If it's just a few items its best just to mute it. Otherwise You can ask the owner to please take them off of shout, if You haven't already done so. My word of advise? Just ask in a polite non threatening, Non rude manner despite Your understandable upset.

Can we just have a grid-wide ban on objects being allowed to shout already????? Or maybe have an intermediary distance of say 40m that they are only allowed to broadcast to???

To the best of my knowledge....a lot of those objects CAN be set to only reach a certain distance.....for that very reason. I have a lucky chair in my shop and I made sure to set it up so it only 'shouts' in MY property...It cannot be 'heard' unless one is in my shop or on the grounds. To me, that's really the only considerate way to do it. I'd ask (nicely at first) if there's any way they can set those items, as was suggested earlier, to only shout to a certain range. If that doesn't work....might be time to look in to renting or buying in a 'residential' sim.... It really does have its perks.

It might have been mentioned before, but how do you mute people with the new Communication Window? If they are close it is no problem. But I can't get people or objects beyond chat range to show up in the option menu (the one you get when you hit the little blue arrows).

I hope for your sake that all the SHOUTING isn't a land ploy to acquire more land in your sim. Make enough noise and some landowners will put their land up for sale, then the club owner swoops in and adds to his/her holdings. Just wait it out, it's more likely the club will fold since clubs are a dime a dozen in SL. The club owner is probably driving customers out with all the object shouting, who will never return or recommend the place. I think you will have back your peace and quiet eventually.

Or
If asking nicely gets nothing, and LL don't want to know about "inter-resident disputes" , how about you and all the good neighbours setting up something really awful:
Object listens Get the 'speaking' agent ID If the agent is not on a friend/good neighbour list test if it is outside normal chat range (lag-reducing measure to prevent scanning for normal chat and other objects in a network of such objects) If it is then it's a shouter and - object shouts a very longwinded complaint, asking that the shouting be stopped - maybe (also) IMs the agent if it's an avatar, asking them to stop shouting pretty please. - object changes its name randomly (communicates name to a network of such objects for 'friend' status) - Rinse and repeat
Yes it's nasty, laggy, etc. - but *IF they won't stop, and IF LL don't want to know* and the alternative is the move out, then what the hell?? If the benefit to them of their shouting is outweighed by the downside of guaranteed complaints in their faces, they might consider being nice for a change.

Had a similar situation arise at one point..my solution? I kindly asked the owners to stop the shouting. They refused. So...I did what I thought was justified. Overnight, the club no longer shouted.
What did I do?
Well, lets just say that you cannot divide by 0.

If you can't get them to stop the shouting IM me. I'll be glad to join you for several evenings of shouting of our own. Maybe you can get other friends to join. Sounds like fun to me to stop this subtle form of griefing.

What's sad is that everyone who visits my land also has to mute all of them. I'm thinking of putting a notecard giver out with all their names.

From: Novis Dyrssen Am I the only one going "Huh...?" here...? Probably not..... but think hard about it. Hopefully, a genuine "Huh" would be in the minority. There may well be people who have a parcel in SL who sit on a couch in their virtual RL-replica home and watch a video stream. I'm really, really, really (sort of) supportive of that. Then there are others who might use their parcels for things that you can't even imagine. Y'know, running knicker-ironing animations and stuff like that. The point is that the shouting is a PITA. What you happen to be doing when the shouting distracts you from it is neither here not there. Despite the millions of US$ sloshing around, the ethos of SL is still primarily geeky. If someone is getting grief from neighbours, and LL isn't sorting it out - find a geek Geeks know that dividing by zero is 'impossible' but that does not stop them from writing code just to confirm it.

From: Novis Dyrssen Am I the only one going "Huh...?" here...? Part of my parcel is the "Second Death Graveyard" When I'm scripting or doing things requiring no moving around, I sit down in a grave. It's peaceful and helps me think.

So I had a rather amicable conversation with the club owner... turns out the club's dance floor is over 20m, so that's the only way they know to communicate that far to everyone.
Now if I could just get the repeater system to work. LOL
