If I want to belong to a group but do not want that fact published in my profile, how can I keep it from showing? I don't see a way of doing that either in the preferences or group menu items from the main menu.

It's a property in the group, set by the group owner. They can set certain roles within the group to not show up on the group list, either in the group window or your profile.
Unfortunately, not much you can do, unless the group owner is willing to make a role for you. (You should note that the group will still be visible to you, but not to others who are not in the group. At least that was my experience when playing around with my alts.) |

That's too bad. It would be nice to be able to keep some things private.

For privacy, you create an Alt or second account just to use in that group.
no one need to know except the friends you choose. _____________________

If a group is not listed in search then the ordinary members will not show by default. My land groups are private, and my alts that aren't in them can't see the membership on my profile.
If you want total privacy, form a group with an alt as sole owner and officer, and add yourself as an ordinary member. Check those roles as mentioned. I think you can add things like parcel management rights without tripping into "officer" territory. I *think* that officer level (and therefore visibility) is linked to the ability to add members to the group. Without a group listing in search that means only people who find the group owned land (if any) will find the name of the owner of the group, nothing more. If the group owns no land, I think it's impossible to find the members from any list without being in the group yourself. _____________________

How do you not show a group in your profile?
I know about not showing it if someone looks in "search" but not on the profile. Thanks |

How do you not show a group in your profile? I know about not showing it if someone looks in "search" but not on the profile. Please read the answers above... mine if you are talking about a group you do not own, Ace's if you are talking about a group you do own. The basic point is that it is not controlled by you, unless you are the owner (or perhaps an officer) of the group. |

For privacy, you create an Alt or second account just to use in that group. no one need to know except the friends you choose. Avacea, That won't work when you really want "yourself" in the group. I don't want to create a dummy of myself and go shopping for all the AOs and attachments every time this situation comes up, then have to explain "No Avion 1 owns this, but it's really me," etc. I've dropped groups for this reason, also, Monica. I suppose one answer is to give up my seedy lifestyle. |

I played with this last night. What Ace said.
The group itself must be hidden from the group search list for it to not appear in a person's profile. Note that other members of the group can see it in your profile, but a random third party person cannot. If the group is searchable, the owner may elect to hide members. But the group will still appear in a person's profile to a random third party. |

If you wish to get better control of which groups are visible in your profile, please see :
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-471 Logging in and voting for that feature proposal is (IMHO) one of the best ways to raise awareness of the privacy issue. _____________________

If you go to Edit, Select Groups, your groups will populate a box. On the right of that box, you can activate any group you choose, OR select none. When you select none, there will be no group title above your name. Hope that helps!
