Zero Linden's Office Hours today (Aug 23) said they aim to only allow access via a web browser:
[7:54] Zero Linden: what if you had to be logged in the web site to log in to SL..... [7:54] Zero Linden: in particular, [7:55] Zero Linden: once you were logged in on the web site, the web site would have some large button "Go In World"

And what purpose would this serve, really?

From: Cristalle Karami And what purpose would this serve, really? I'm guessing it would be so they can implement OpenID. Which is in a different thread.

One use would be better forensics. At present, the secondlife.log file is overwritten by the viewer. Login via a browser would leave a longer trail for CSIs or SOCOs to use when taking a home computer for investigation.

From: Cristalle Karami And what purpose would this serve, really? It would defeat the purpose of SL becoming a metaverse, if it has to rely on traditional 2D browsers to work. Would that mean that Linden Labs has given up on the dream and realized it's only a 3D chat tool? Is it just me or has Linden Labs been moving as much as it can FROM SL to a 2D browser format?

From: Raudf Fox Is it just me or has Linden Labs been moving as much as it can FROM SL to a 2D browser format? Not just you. There's a lot of web-based material in the pipeline, from all I gathered. Step backwards in a lot of ways, I tink. Mari

Hmm seems like they want people to be able to interact inworld without actually being there.

rereading my chat log, this at the start of the meeting:-
[7:51] Zero Linden: so [7:51] Zero Linden: let's say that we, or you, wanted some stronger form of authentication [7:52] Zero Linden: for example, say we supported some form of electronic key fob [7:52] Zero Linden: and you could choose to enable that for your account [7:52] Zero Linden points at the phrase "you could choose" [7:53] Zero Linden raises eyebrows [7:53] Zero Linden draws underlines [7:53] Zero Linden doesn't want to see panic stricken headlines in certain newspapers

May be a couple things conflated here (and sorry if I contributed to the confusion). One thing is using browser-based authentication for single sign-on, a la OpenID. Another might be a browser-based viewer.
I haven't kept up with the browser-based viewer ideas, but in general the thought was to use some kind of plug-in. I mumbled something about java applets at one office hour or another, but I suspect Flash would be getting more attention.
(Personally, I'd even find useful a text-only IRC window with descriptive "subtitles" when I really need to use SL as "just a chat program." But last I heard, nothing remotely like that was being considered.)

I don't like this idea. How much more bandwidth are they going to hog?? How much more memory? How long will updates take to upload? Fix what's broken, already.
I'm disgruntled today, sorry.

I'm disgruntled today, sorry. I have no idea what this means or what it will do, but I'll be disgruntled with you for solidarity purposes. And I like your hair. *Hugs Oryx*

I'm just bummed (and single again) cause my Partner just informed me yesterday that he's leaving SL for good. He's bored. Selling the island and everything. So now I'm gonna be homeless too.

From: poopmaster Oh there is a browser based viewer allready
i tried it once
didnt work
They're just switching the authentication part over to the browser, not the game itself.

SL uses a mozilla browser already - what keeps that from being used for authentication in an invisible to the user form?
