Hi,
I'm brand new to SL (Like, within the last hour or so!) and I'm having trouble with my skin. I've searched the forums but couldn't find a topic similiar so sorry if this has already been posted..
Bascially, I just tried on a freebie skin and my arms have gone red!
I asked someone and they told me to get another one, but the same happened again.
Any ideas? It's a little bit embarassing!
Thanks x

Erm ok, thanks for that.
Anyway... I've tried re-logging and I've put on about 4 different skins but nothing is working.

Try putting on a different skin. There are several in your Library/Clothing folder. Same problem? Rebake your textures. Select CTRL+ALT+R. Same problem? Select Edit/Preferences/Network. Click "Clear Cache". Exit the Preferences settings, log out of SL, and relog. Same problem? Put on a default avatar. Hit CTRL+ALT+D, then Advanced/Character Tests/Test Male or Test Female. If you rez correctly, then go ahead and put on your normal avatar shape, skin, and clothes. Same problem? Check your video drivers. If you are using NVIDIA drivers, don't use later versions than the 175 series. STILL red? Wear long sleeves and gloves.

Hi Brody....
Welcome~!! What's probably happening is an on going issue with some of the textures used in SL....if you have an nVidia graphics card.....there's a driver issue that conflicts with 'some' clothing and skin textures in SL.
Right now there's no fix for it....but Linden Labs is aware and hopefully we'll see this resolved in the near future. But....all is not lost....there's plenty of skins and clothes that will look just fine. Your best bet is to shop around at different skin shops and try the 'demos' first. If the demo looks normal....then the purchased skin will be fine too. It's trickier with clothes because you can't buy demos.....but enough residents are aware of the issue that you can get good advice on where to get clothes that will look right.
One of the basic fixes for general avatar texture issues is to quickly go in and out of 'edit appearance' mode....(this often forces corrections on wacky textures)....or....if your using windows (for Mac I'm not sure how to get the menu).....press cntrl/alt/R This 'rebakes' avatar textures and helps correct glitches. It wont solve the current issue with nVidia, but you'll notice that occasionally avatar textures will get borked in laggy places....or when trying to change clothes.....and rebake helps.
Again....your best bet is to shop around for skins....they're not cheap.....but the folks who spend the hours in photoshop to create these skins deserve our thanks! Some of the skins out there are absolutely beautiful.....and honestly....most will work just fine for you!
happy hunting~!

Fixed in-world, nVidia card bug. Just for your reference, Brody . (Ctrl-Alt-D to get the Advanced menu if you loose it) Advanced / Rendering / Features and uncheck Palletized Textures... Then Advanced / Character / Rebake Textures (or Ctrl-Alt-R is the keyboard shortcut) to rebake. Like I told you in-world, unless you go back to the 175 driver series you'll have to do that at every log-in . Additional quick little warning about keyboard shortcuts: it's easier to remember the menus than it is to remember keyboard shortcuts. SL has TONS and if you miss a key you'll likely turn something else on/off so menus are safer if you're not sure you remember a shortcut correctly.

I was going crazy about this texture loading issue already. My mesh skirt all of a sudden won't load correctly since yesterday. Part of my skin including gloves, were also black. Clear cache and rebake weren't helping and I already thought of downgrading my Nvidia 178.24 (latest release) to a 175.xx driver. Luckily I searched the forums first and found your suggestion and it helped! BTW, thanks to all residents who have always been helpful giving good advices on the forums! Peace out! Can'Tell
