Right-click the SL shortcut you use to start the program, then choose "properties". There you see the path the shortcut uses to start the program file. At the end of the path, you put a space and then "-multiple" (without the quote marks). Restart any client you have open - voilá.

You need to right click ( properties ) of your SL icon and add -multiple to the top line ..ie.

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -multiple

Im using a mac and so I eventually figured out the equivalent to 'properties' is 'get info'.
The file name on a mac is 'secondlife.app' so I added a space and then ' - multiple' but then I get a message saying 'warning application will appear as a folder changed'. So I changed it anyway and now its folder on my desktop instead of an icon. I reopened the log in window but I dont see how to log in two avatars. what do I do next? Where do I log my second avatr in? Thanks

Shep you just launch one SL and log in. Then launch a second SL and log in there with your other account. Voila.

heh. You mean after you put in that -multiple I assume? Because I've tried running that third party SL viewer at the same time as the SL viewer, and it didn't work (wanted to see if I could spot the difference :)).

On a Mac, first you duplicate the SL app. Then you right click on it (option-click with a one-button mouse), and select "Show Package Contents". In the window that opens, you need to open the Contents folder, and inside that, open the "Resources" folder.

In the Resources folder is a file named "arguments.txt". Open it and add the following line (It may be an empty file at first):

-multiple

Then save the file and launch copies of that modified app. Each copy can run a concurrent session.

I usually add more to my arguments.txt file:

-multiple
-purge
-noprobe
-port 13000
-login Ceera Murakami xxxxxxx

Where "Ceera Murakami" is the account name and "xxxxxxx" is the password. With a -login line, you don't need to enter the account name or password. Omit the password from that line, and you'll need to type the password, but still don't have to type the account name.

Purge clears the cache each time you log in. Noprobe and port 13000 were recommended by someone else, and maked it easier to work with a router that has a firewall.

When you use a SL app set up this last way, with the avatar name specified, I name each copy "SL-" and the name of that avatar, or their initials.

Tip: Before modifying the icon to start SL, rename it. That way, next time you update SL, it won't get clobbered.

I keep two, one for each av, with "-multiple -login Lear Cale mypassword" (and the other av name & password for the other). When I start it, it logs in immediately. (This is no good if you want to choose whether to log in at home or last location each time.)
